.CH "Introduction" 1
.H 1 "Introduction"
This document describes the UNIX\(rg System V Release 4 Machine Readable Documentation (MRD)
for the Source Code Product (SCP).
The SCP MRD for Release 4 consists of one 6250-bpi magnetic tape.
This tape contains the minimal subset of customer documents that describes Release 4
(primarily manual pages),
plus proprietary documents.
The SCP MRD tape is received by all UNIX System V Release 4 source code
licensees in conjunction with the tapes containing the source code
for UNIX System V Release 4.
.P
To order the source tape containing the complete set of customer documentation
(guides and reference material),
ask your AT&T Account Executive for the
UNIX System V Release 4
.BT "Documentation Reproduction Provision (DRP) Machine Readable Documentation" .
To learn the differences between the SCP MRD tape and the DRP MRD tape,
see Chapter 3.
.P
The documents on this tape correspond to software load K18.2 of February 1990.
The appendixes describe documentation changes since previous MRD products.
Here are a few high-level changes since previous MRDs:
.BL
.LI
The product is now referred to as Release 4, not
Release 4.0.
The titles of the documents have been changed to reflect this name change,
although text references may still refer to Release 4.0.
.LI
The following new titles have been added to this tape:
.BL
.LI
.BT "Programmer's Guide: Writing File System Types"
.LI
.BT "Programmer's Guide: X11/NeWS\(rg Graphical Windowing System"
.LI
.BT "Technology/File Mapping Guide"
.LE
.LI
The term ``Yellow Pages'' has been used in two documents on the Release 4 tape:
\f2Programmer's Guide: Networking Interfaces\f1 and \f2Network User's and
Administrator's Guide\f1.
``Yellow Pages'' is a registered trademark in the United Kingdom of British
Telecommunications plc, and may also be a trademark of other telephone
companies around the world.
AT&T is revising future versions of software and documentation to replace
all references to ``Yellow Pages'' and ``YP'' with ``Network Information
Service'' and ``NIS,'' respectively.
The functionality of the two is the same; only the name is being changed.

.H 2 "About This Document"
This document describes the contents of the MRD tape,
both documents and tools.
.BL
.LI
Chapter 2 describes how to extract documents and tools from the tape,
and how to modify and use them to build your own documents.
It also explains what other tools you must have available to
format the documents provided on the tape.
Where applicable, it includes notes on problems you might encounter.
In addition, it lists exceptions to the document set design that is
provided in Chapter 3.
.P
Chapter 2 also gives instructions for installing and using
.SM DOCTOOLS ,
the new set of tools provided to process the
documents on the MRD tape.
The tools and their documentation are on the MRD tape under directory
.UI DOCTOOLS .
.LI
Chapter 3 provides the document set design,
which includes a list of all Release 4 documents,
an explanation of changes to the structure and philosophy
of the document set since Release 3,
a description of the contents of each document
(including a summary of changes since Release 3),
and a list of the manual pages in each document.
.LI
Appendix A contains a section on each document
describing high level changes since Release 3 and
special printing instructions.
.LI
Appendix B contains a section on each document with detailed descriptions of
changes between the Release 4 MRD product of October 1989
(corresponding to software load K18.0)
and the Release 4 update MRD product of February 1990
(corresponding to software load K18.2).
Any of the books may have had format changes or slight editorial changes;
Appendix B describes technical and content changes.
