The Old Computer Challenge 2026 is over. It ended on 7-ELEVEn Day.
Fun times were had and will continue even after this.
This year, I started with the thought of an old PC case as a
shadowbox. Much of the time in the first few days was spent
wondering what I was going to do with the case. By the third day,
I had some direction. The case was going to have a pinball and
pachinko theme!
From there, I just kept playing with the case, adding parts,
removing parts, thinking, trying different things, etc. It was
like a game of, "what can I build from my collection of parts?"
Maybe this should have been called, "Old Computer Parts Challenge,"
for me.
In this challenge, I found myself revisiting harvested parts from
old projects that have since been dismantled. This brought me to
thinking about how much I used to enjoy tinkering with stuff like
this, which I haven't done so in a long while. Also, even though
the parts are old, they can be repurposed into creating something
else, outliving their original purpose and bringing about joy!
The final manifestation of this project for OCC 2026 is an
appliance (?) with emulated video pinball and pachinko games, an
analogue marble run, a microcontroller for audio visualization and
many blinken lights stuffed in an old PC case.
This project is not over, but OCC week for 2026 is. It is nice to
have events like this to help motivate me to participate in doing
stuff and creating stuff along with the community. I have been
following along when I can, on the surface webs, on the mastodons,
in the gopher underground, on the irc, in the smolnets, in the
Internet's basements..
I will most likely go into overtime for OCC. There is m0ar 2
explore and things that could be done better with a clearer head
and m0ar coffee!!!
Thanks to all those who participated with me or followed along for
OCC 2026! Special thanks to Tekk for bring us together this year
and Solene for the original idea!
Now I can take the time to really enjoy the content you have shared
for your projects without the overhead of worrying about what I
need to work on for my project ;)
BTW, here is projects page for 2026. [1]
