So I had L5-S1 12 mm herniation microdissectomy 19 Jan and spent whole
last two days on my legs walking. Hopefully I didn't damage it further
with such load.
Prior to X day I started to loose left leg function and non-steroid
painkiller injections didn't work. Somehow I was able to pass yet
another MRI and had surgery same day I turned for help (which is just
fantastic here). And everything was great except for last 3 days when I
fully recovered and was expected to socialize.
Hospital for neural surgery with 10 doctors served about 1 million
people. There are others smaller of course but this was central for
most complicated cases of brain cancer, stroke and urgent cases. I
suppose mine was urgent - I didn't feel any change after opiate
premedication.
Neural surgery level contains about 10 wards with about 8 beds in each.
Overall level was overloaded with people in hall with like 70 people on
beds. That said level had two toilets: one for staff and one for
patients, patient's toilet had two rooms, men's room without lock on
door. During these 10 days not a fucking single person guessed to knock
at door before looking at someone shitting, including medical staff,
including people I asked to knock for 3 times in row. Last day I was
there someone left pissed diaper to dry on heating battery. Not sure
how it happened but walls were covered in dried shit too. Those where
only toilet/sink available for patients (imagine amount of people
incapable of walking/unconscious requiring pooping aid and washing).
There was Wi-Fi but nurses didn't give password.
One of neighbour chamber had woman which howled as I was told for last
4 months; quite loud, but ten days I was in department her room was
filled with 7 more patient beds, one of which died during that period
(goddamn she shouted loud). I made contact with one patient's relative
from that room, he spent most time in earplugs and headphones. As I
understood she had terminal brain cancer and there's no euthanasia
allowed here.
Man in opposite room shouted every night about jews in government. It's
a miracle I didn't clash with his two meters/120 kg drunk son
juggernaut (which as I heared had hit 5 cars in accident and had to
sell his apartment). I'd certainly prolonged my time in neurosurgery.
In other room there was dying woman. Her son asked for help from nurse
on duty, she called doctors and reanimation. It appeared woman's heart
stopped beating. She was brought to reanimation chamber (10 meters by
same hall). All in all took about 5 minutes. She died.
My room was one which wasn't filled to max.
My nearest neighbour was 50 years old man with half of skull removed.
He showed me his brain's MRI, there was like chicken egg inside. So he
already had half brain removed during previous intervention and didn't
feel pity for complaining about shouting woman from next room at 4 a.m.
but he did it louder that shouting woman and exploded on every
complaints. To paint it more expressive, he drank at least 10-15 and
more teabags each day, had opiate dependency and was covered with
prison tatooes (some cut off with knife). His timbre resonated in my
head, and he didn't stopp even at night, switching to patients in hall
and man complaining about jews - he almost didn't sleep.
Other man was 50 years old car incident victim with 24 bone breaks and
skull literally connected on glue. He passed his yearly rehabilitation.
Mister victim pardoned offender (which was region's public prosecutor)
and day to day complained of low social payment which government should
pay for his recovery (which by time consisted of nootropics and rotten
leg treatment). Also he was DJ in his village and didn't stop playing
redneck's clickhop from his mobile until someone shouted at night.
Also there was villager of nearly my age with same surgery. Mister slug
should have been walking by second day from surgery (he did it day
earlier as I did) but he complained about pain. He also had high
temperature by the end of antibiotic course, so doctors asked him to
scan whole spine and brain, and it appeared he had sores in lungs which
didn't heal from pneumonia of half year ago because he continued
smoking on every chance. After all possible analyzes done he started
physical exercises and began to walk. All this time he oppressed his
wife which had to take off his shit few times a day.
Another roommate was 40 years old alcoholic Victor, who arrived in
hospital with head injury for 5th year in row.
There where also 40 years old military veteran with brain cancer
mourning for lack of Stalin nowadays and young man with head injured
with bottle recovering from coma. Young man had like 10 visitors each
day.
After 7 days in their company I lost patience and blowed off steam.
Last days all they discussed was cooking.
. . .
I also had migraine attack being in hospital and finally tried
sumatriptan. I took 25 mg diclofenac before and 50 mg sumatriptan when
I suspected migraine. It's first time I tried it and I guess it worked
but I got 150/90 blood pressure (I usually have 120/80) and had to fix
that with 25 mg of captopril to 130/90.
Not a single person I contacted for recovery recommendations did any
comment. Welcome for any advice how to not screw up spine right after
surgery because I think 10 km of walk over ice-covered road yesterday
was about too much.
If you wonder how happened I don't discuss all of this with my doctor -
all of them suck. Chief surgeon from nearest large hospital I contacted
said I should inject meloxicam after I said diclofenac injections
didn't work (that meant I did like 4 injections on last night because I
had nothing better). And sclerotic neurologist from nearest hospital
asked me to pass L5-S1 MRI after I followed his own direction to pass
L5-S1 MRI.
