       I think I have somewhere collection of  TASMs from 2 to 5; some earlier
       versions  were  lighter in  size,  but  some couldn't  compile  sources
       exceeding 100kB.
       
       If  you have  real urge  to hack  some peripherals  of older  standards
       or  DOS  crap  - techhelp  is  the  only  way  (it's in  my  /pool  BTW
       [1]).
       
       Survival  pick  for  x86:  abort (TSR  Ctrl-Alt-Del  kill  irresponsive
       program) - few kB IIRC, vc  volcov commander (kill TSRs) - lightweight,
       hiew. There were alt shells, can't recall titles.
       
       Last time  I made old  boxes backups, I  used homemade util  to recover
       3.5/5  inch floppies  with random  access. Also  I had  to keep  rescue
       collection of  MBRs for different  DOS variants (and operate  them with
       same tool). I had to jump from  box to box taking really old HDDs (some
       up to  20 MB) to Winbond  486 box with 16  MB RAM and Debian  3 to move
       data to HDD which  I could connect over USB HDD  reader to finally grab
       something.
       
       That FREEDOS  shit had (has?)  terrible bug, something  about "leaking"
       memory. Condition  was some  high memory driver  loaded; after  you run
       first program it become unusable in  some way and requires reboot every
       time. I don't remember details.
       
       Boxes are  given away, reel-to-reel/cassette recorders  are broken, Z80
       boards are  burned. I still  keep unsoldered sets  of ICs with  Z80 and
       8086.  Last time  I  thought  of DOS  and  assembly  was BIOS  pre-boot
       extension module. Previous time I thought  of assembly was when AVR GCC
       compiled "while" loop into rjmp -2. No more ugly hacks.
