Given number of communication methods emerging last decade it's
natural to classify communications by number of subscribers, backlog
availability, responsiveness and, for example, item persistency (for
reference purposes). Such classification may cover all means like
email, irc, xmpp, blog, forum, wiki and so on.
Public article is just another kind of same communication - see
academic papers circulation with references system, which is reply
method. And it's much same method as anonymous board, bboard,
blog with comments, whatever else. These are more or less same
entities, commenting part solves more or less same function of public
feedback/reply link.
Talking of communication method capabilities, I had experience of
switch from chat format to anonboard in VPN because it provided more
structured conversation format with minimal effort.
Major drawback (or in limited scope benefit) in gopher is commenter
anonymity, suggesting limited application of comments on gopher.
Nevertheless, when phlogs are organized in way sdf runs them, you may
recognize user without gopher auth capabilities if he comments article
under his user on sdf, like I do.
Closer to reply part: public feedback it is (little forum), though
fundamentally sucky at the current state.
Ideally with comments allowed, comments may be available for little
details (instead of dragging author to chat instance for really short
conversation), but articles provide body of information and reply
chains (like mail list gates). That can be achieved by emailing author
(so he adds reply link if he cares), by respondent messing with OP post
(like in this phlog by leaving comment) or with some kind of
centralized/decentralized intermediate arbiter (facebook/mastodon which
I never used/some 3rd party cataloguing publication/archive). All have
pros and cons. Imagine purpose of posting as conversation - like
emailing - where convo can be branched at any point by someone jumping
in with his reply link. It's totally comfy from reader perspective.
That's what it is. Just don't get away into intentional uncertainty and
information ownership. It won't answer your question. It looks to me
like you're questioning mean of mind augmentation when capability
wasn't compromised to the ground. As you see I didn't ever mentioned
intention/motive, only possibility for this or that.
And yes, I have motivation for stirring things up (replying this
message), where I see something may bring yield (gopher lack of
authentication).
Do I miss anything? Talking about public availability and persistency,
it's good opportunity to remind peeps of gophernet archive org.
