Midnight commander. Started using FMs from first days with computers.
People in terminals have now fancy directory history navigation, dir
name completion, masking and hotlinks but it really looks like a mess
when you do file management from command line with all those cd/ls. I
pretty much see people using all the same stuff - i3/urxvt/tmux and so
on but I barely see people mentioning FMs (well, it sucks sometimes but
other FMs suck more). Somehow I suspect that I may do something wrong
(even for so much years) but maybe you just need mc survival guide?
Usecase where it really may suck is remote shell.

About markdown. I started from asciidoc before markdown (and markdown
is backed by idiots, see [1]) but that's what I stick to now for daily
needs. I just choose from makeshift converters with multiple space
(txt2man) or "::"-asciidoc definition list notation and those from
pandoc extensions. So that's probably answer - when I need something
bit more complex than 10 markdown rules I may use asciidoc. [1]

Things I may mention which you maybe didn't know (well, they are
       probably widely known now):

       - mosh for laggy shells
       - xmlstarlet for XML (no SAX parser for huge dumps)
       - jq for JSON (it's really popular now and as I remember already on sdf)
       - miller for CSV (but it doesn't treat quoted CSV yet)
