Few years ago I was forced to use android tablet. Since I didn't give a
fuck about mobile networking I started with 2G connection with dload
rate of 20..25 MB per hour in good weather.
At first I tried KBOX for a set of terminal/essential survival tools.
It bribed me with laughing dload size (remember 2G) but appeared to be
horrible waste of time (totally buggy if working at all). [1]
I had to keep existing android installation so next (and final) thing I
tried was GNURoot with Debian, which I got over Fdroid. I was capable
to download it over 2G before I got hands on 3G. The only thing I had
to fix was something in /var/cache/apt about aptitude to get it
working. Obvious drawback was debian base size - something around few
GB. But I got everything I can imagine as long as it is cli -
zsh/mc/tmux/weechat/ssh/whatever. UTF-8, key combos - usually most of
things just worked.
I used protective film on tablet's screen. Something was wrong with
sticking touch events. And it's generally slow experience. I also had
tablet case with USB keyboard, where at first you'd break your fingers,
but in general it gave somewhat faster typing and saved precious screen
space. I remember there was some drawback with M- combinations or
something like that. And I had to customize plenty of shortcuts of tmux
and something else I hardly remember.
Some survival tools (aside of what you may run from gnuroot/debian):
- youtube-dl (with gnu root) and then aimp and vlc
- hacker keyboard (google play)
- simply do () - I tried all fdroid todo tools and some from playstore,
and sticked to this one - it's just list of lists and then list of
items with checkboxes - freaking simple. More fancy tools with
priorities, tags and dates was todoist (iirc)
- ted (fdroid) - simple text editor
- mathdroid (fdroid) - calc
- ghost commander (fdroid), that's where I made shortcuts for pdfs and
packed archives
- MediBang Paint (google play) - best (of worst) experience when I was
in need of something like "paint" - it had layers, pencil tool and
photo effects
- datastats (fdroid) - up/down link speed (it doesn't weight 30 MB like
Speedtest)
- DiskUsage (fdroid) - your ncdu for touch screens
- other fdroid tools: apkshare, cache cleaner
I'd also like to mention Battle for Wesnoth port by Alessandro Pira.
Initially there was moment when I had to use its official FAQ, but then
it was just flawless. Wesnoth campaign packs can be sorted by download
size (lots are less than 1 MB), and it appeared I didn't play many.
Overall it's excellent experience if you have half hour of free time -
no need to spend all of attention diving for example into some reading
topic, and since it's turn based you may interrupt and continue at any
given moment.
## Afterword
I'm fucking happy person I stayed for so long away from mobile touch
shit, I really can't believe people use this. I had to keep 3-5
alternative tools for single task because all of them sooner or later
crashed/failed to do task/failed to open own results/people used
different tool for that task. And that's not mentioning plenty of tools
under particular "brand" names which only read their file format
(if they may do even this properly) and tools operating in the
butt (read cloud) requiring stable highspeed connection. Now imagine
time to install and test all of them. Without proper precautions
android experience may turn sane dude instantly greyhair. Humanity has
declined.
Go on if you have something to tell about your experience with
archlinux or anything else you use on your tablets, especially on
touch-screen user experience aspect. I'd appreciate it next time I try
contemporary mobile/tablet. Any deadlock situations? Tools ecosystem?
Looking at android security news and vendor update policies (for
example my tablet stopped updating in few years) I doubt I will use on
daily basis anything stocked with software which will sooner or later
be discontinued with no alternative (and vendor doesn't tell if it'll
drop your model - and it surely will); and I don't know present state
of things with linux and siblings on touch screen. This question
especially makes sense since I'd like hardened case tablet and really
won't enjoy it becoming obsolete with software.
