You will be unjust and greedy if you want to obtain things you
have not paid the price for

Everything has a cost. There is a price to fame and wealth,
reputation and praise. And there is a price for dignity and
justice. How can we expect to gain these prizes if we are
       unwilling to pay the cost?

It is also a nice reminder that there is something to gain with
not paying these costs as well, especially when one is the price
       of the other.

But, like yesterday's entry, I do wonder how best to apply this
lesson for the wealthy and/or powerful students of Epictetus to
my own rather pedestrian life. I guess the lesson for me is to
not envy the rich and powerful for the benefits they have accrued
when I am not willing to do the things they have done to obtain
them. Be satisfied with my simple life, for by it I gain many
things I would otherwise have to give up; my peace, my time, my
leisure. These have value as well, and all the more so if I
spend them wisely on my personal growth, to be a better person,
husband, father, son, co-worker. It is up to me to commit my
coin though, and I have my doubts about my discipline and
       dedication to the craft.
