                    Welcome in the JOTAJOTI Gopherhole.

        Gopher is an Internet system that predates the World Wide Web.
        Before it, there was only FTP. FTP only provides a list of files, meaning you have to know exactly which files you need.
        This is impractical when you want to provide information to large groups of users such as all the students at a university.
        Launched in 1991, Gopher was the first attempt to present explanatory text alongside files in a clear, organized way. A
        vast array of Gopher sites quickly emerged, some of which are still available today;
        for instance, the newspaper *taz* still operates a "gopher hole" (thats what Gopher sites are called,
        because gophers (the burrowing rodents live in holes):

        Gopher can display text and links just like a standard webpage, though it cannot display images.
        That limitation combined with the plan to charge fees for Gopher later, led to its downfall.

        Just two years later, the World Wide Web was released, free for everyone to use. It offered everything Gopher could do,
        but additionally displays images, animations, clickable buttons, and color.
