Minecraft is a video game by Mojang. To help understand it and why people play it, go watch Hermitcraft. 

Hermitcraft is a collective of artists who play Minecraft and publish videos and other types of documents about 
it. There's sculptors, technicians, game creators, story authors, teachers, architects, programmers, and more. 
Each of the hermits has their own gaming style. 
  
Sometimes they work together on a project. Sometimes they play in-game games together. They tend to set up a 
marketplace inside their game world which mostly works because of honesty. Although sometimes they undercut each 
other. And then the competition takes revenge.
