Common Deceny - Tom Allen ------------------------- I'm a big Tom Allen fan and have read both his previous books, however this is his foray in to non-fiction, and is really enjoyable. I'd describe it as a cozy drama, with very slight mystery elements. The story is set in suburbia there are a few twists and turns, although most can be guessed as you read the story and the characters develop. That is less important than you might think as the journey of the characters is the more enjoyable aspect. One character has an alarming similarity to a Thursday Murder Club character (so I'd imagine Richard Osman will be on the phone expecting some royalties). Luckily for me she is my favourite character so I didn't mind! There were a few instances where my pet peeve appeared, which is the use of the same adjective several times in a single passage of text. I don't know if this is a 'just me' thing or is something professionals should avoid; I didn't notice it in Tom's other books, but it did occur enough times here for me to pause for thought. On occasion there was a bit of repitition too, really hammering on home the personality traits of some characters which reminded me of the adage show don't tell. As I came to the end of the book I did start to wonder how much of the gay couples characteristics were drawn from Tom and Alfie (Tom's partner), which is an aside but have a read yourself and let me know what you think. Overall I would recommend the book, it's a nice easy read and perfect bedtime material.
