Magic Level 3 and beyond ------------------------ The first part of this discussion deals with Magic Level 3 very conceretely. The second part discusses ideas and plans for levels 4 and 5. Note that some parts of level 3 are already implemented (and some of the spells for levels 4 and 5 are, too.) If you find that these changes are not in the repository, please let me know so that I can dig them out of my local repository. Part I: Magic Level 3 ====================== Quests 19, 20, 21, 22 are implemented, according to my notes. Let me know if you start working on this but can't find the sources! For spell names and meanings, please refer to the appendix. Quest 14: Transmutation Tablet ------------------------------ After teaching T22, Auldsbel remarks that the player will need to make a transmutation tablet (or a similarly powerful catalyst) in order to use more advanced transmtuation magic. He explains that this is a rite of passage for transmuters, and that they must construct three parts: - Decomposition Theorem At a place where sand becomes part of the wind (Pachua's place. One of the nomads helps with this.) - Polymorphism Postulate At a place where the air becomes part of the water (fountain) - Integration Corollary (Quest 21) At a place where the water becomes part of the earth (mouboo caves) (Each is a stone-shard like item). He will then to compose the Transmutation Tablet for them. + 50k XP Quest 15: Life Rune ------------------- After teaching L21, Elanore explains that the player need a life rune (or equivalent item) to continue. She notes that transmutation magic is needed to make one and points the player to Auldsbel. As soon as the player knows about magic runes, Auldsbel can be asked about them. He explains T22 and notes that it works as follows: - Identify the name of a patron spirit or demon who will bless the rune - Locate a place that is sacred to that spirit/demon - Obtain a piece of clay - Obtain an object that represents the astral essence of the spirit/demon - Cast T22, giving the name of the patron spirit, at that sacred place Patron spirit: Anare. Elanore can provide this name. Place sacred to that spirit: A burrowed cave with a small pond underneath the druid tree (place of healing). Elanore knows that this cave existed but remembers that it was closed off (perhaps destroyed?) during an earthquake. Sagatha confirms that the cave is beneath the druid tree, `and alive as long as he is.' (need burrow spell.) Astral essence: Breed a cactus egg: put an acorn into a cactus, cast `growth', and wait for three days. (Wyara and Sagatha can explain this one.) Idea: After 3 days, a cactus egg will emerge. Practice: After 3 days, there is only a hole left. The players can re-start the process or ask around. Elanore: No idea. Maybe someone took it? Pachua would know. Pachua: Actually took the egg, seeing that it was ripe, and is planning on planting it. Since he can't know for certain what the player's motives are, he tasks them to cure two (randomly selected) cacti with the `growth' spell before he will return the egg. + 50k exp + 50k XP Quest 16: War Rune ------------------ (See also Quest 15.) Patron spirit: Toriphes (King of Swords. Our two swords both know the name.) Place: PvP zone. (`A place of bloodshed between sisters and brothers'.) Astral essence: Black Sword (`too heavy to wield as a weapon'.) Nicolas can forge one, but players must provide him with five ingots of black iron. +25k + 50k XP Quest 17: Enchanter's Amulet ---------------------------- When the player is ready, Sagatha remarks that they must grow them an Enchanter's Amulet to proceed. She first teaches them the `growth' spell and then explains that they must bury a cocoon in a field in a sandstorm, then let it rain on it, then enchant it with the `grow' spell and repeat this step for three days in a row (can wait a little longer, but twice on the same day will destroy the growth). Players can inspect the site and find that the cocoon is growing. After growing for the third and last time, players can take out the cocoon and (whenever they are ready) use it to summon a wood monster that, when killed, gives them the enchanter's amulet. + 100k XP Quest 18: Summoner's Bell ------------------------- When the player is ready, Sagatha remarks that they need a summoner's bell for some of the subsequent ether spells. She mentions that the bell must be made out of silver (and that the player, unless they are a skilled transmuter, will need someone else's help). - First, get silver ore from underground dungeon underneath new mines (with `burrow') by killing (poisonous) albino scorpions - Refine ore into ingots using transmute spell - Go to jeweller in Tulimshar to make bell +25k XP - Enchant silver bell into Summoner's Bell +25k XP Quest 19: Transmutation to level 3 ---------------------------------- Once ready for level 3, Auldsbel teaches the player T15 and asks them to brew a concentration potion (flag-checked). Players can solve this either directly (which requires considerably more magic exp than level 3 itself) or they can learn T16 from a Tulimshar school-of-magic person. +30k exp Quest 20: Life to level 3 ------------------------- A family in Tulimshar has a sick daughter. They refuse to see Elanore because the last time Elanore tried to help the father, she turned his hair blue. If the players ask Elanore about this before life level 2 + level 3, Elanore explains that she can't help them, but maybe one day she'll let the player help them once they know them enough. When the player is ready for life level 3, Elanore tasks them to aid this daughter. As it turns out, the cure is a special potion, brewed from an iron potion, a concentration potion, a lifestone, and Gamboge. The potion brewing is complicated by the brew needing the right consistency and colour: - watery - very runny - runny - gooey - sticky - very sticky - thick - almost solid (adjusted by root and water) - white - almost white - very light - light - medium - dark - very dark - almost black - black (adjusted by Mauve and Sulphur Powder) Going beyond `very, very runny' is not possible. Going beyond the others will ruin the brew. Every second round, the brew gets stickier. Effects of the components: - root: consistency +3, colour +1 - water: consistency -2 - Mauve: consistency +1, colour +2 - Sulphur: consistency +1, colour -3 (first time brew: +30k exp) However, the daughter won't drink the potion. The parents are exasperated and explain that she only eats (picked randomly) one of the following: - Chocolate cake -> must talk to cake baker, bring milk and chocolate, who will make `laced' chocolate cake - Orange cupcake -> must talk to chef in Dimond's Inn, bring milk and organges, will make `laced' orange cupcake +40k exp Quest 21: War to level 3 ------------------------ Must defeat three DIFFERENT equal-or-higher-level players in PvP combat (this of course sets them back wrt Life magic.) 3x +8k exp Quest 22: Nature to level 3 --------------------------- Evil spirit: 200k GP (no XP) Sagatha: Feed-the-mouboo quest: OrangeCupcake, Orange, Chocolate, Apple, GingerBreadMan, Cake, CherryCake, Root Mouboo will eat three items at a time and react: - happy (win!) - spit some of it out (one wrong) - spit all of it out and groan (two wrong) - refuse to eat (all wrong) sniff: - seems happy - sceptical - very hesitant +50k exp Quest 23: Astral to level 3 --------------------------- Sagatha is worried that pinkies are almost-extinct in their traditional home further north, due to a recent flood. She asks the player to bottle-capture 25 pinkies for relocation to their old homeland. +15k exp Quest 24: Gaining the non-hidden level 3 spells ------------------------------------------------ Transmutation school: --------------------- (a) T15, T16 as per Quest 19. (b) T20, T21 as soon as ready. (c) T28, T29 and Quest 14 (d) T23, T24 as soon as ready (e) T25, T26 after that Life School: ------------ (a) Quest 20 (L20 available on request afterwards.) (b) L21 (c) Quest 15 as soon as heal XP good enough (d) L22 War School: ----------- (a) Quest 21 (b) W21 (c) Quest 16 (d) W20, mention that there is a fireball spell but knowledge of that was lost Well demon: ----------- 50k for N29, on request, as part of Quest 15 (may need to pay multiple times) (a) 200k for level 3 (b) 50k for N23 (c) 50k for N24 (d) 50k for N26 (e) `That's all the nature magic there is, but I can teach you some other powerful spells if you help me escape... once you are a more powerful wizard!' Sagatha: -------- N29 as part of Quest 15 (a) Quest 22 (b) N26 (c) Quest 17 (d) N28 and N22 (e) After trying N22: N20 (f) A20 and G20 (g) After trying A20: N26 (h) Quest 18 (i) A24 (j) After trying A24: N23, N24 (k) After trying N23 or N24: N21 and G21 (mention N27 availability and enable Quest 25.N27) Quest 25: Hidden level 3 spells -------------------------------- Spell scrolls are very rare spider drops (or maybe spellbook drops, if we add a spellbook mob). Spells from scrolls require special flags to operate. Scrolls vanish when read. W22 (fireball) [flag] -------------- Spell scroll This spell can be improved if you read the scroll a second time. N25 (manic-grin) ---------------- In the old wizard's hut's library, if the player is advanced enough to read. N27 (protect-group) [flag] ------------------- Special Sagatha quest: When teaching `shield', Sagatha mentions that she has a similar spell that she will teach them if they can help her with a small matter. The `small matter' is that a family of snakes are terrorising mouboo valley. There is a snake hole somewhere in the northern wall, towards the west (hidden NPC). The players can then go there and lure out the snakes using a steak, a chicken leg, or a flare dart. After killing the first batch of snakes, a mother snake (beefed up grass snake) comes out. Upon defeating that, everything is good. N2a (magic-mouth) [flag] ----------------- Spell scroll A21 (summon snake) [flag] ------------------ Spell scroll T27 (make-blue-rose) [flag] -------------------- Spell scroll A22 (summon black scorpions) ---------------------------- Hidden markings in the Mouboo caves A23 (summon partner) -------------------- From the old wizard, if you get him a certain cake (determined randomly). He offers the quest only after teaching his current one, and only if the player is advanced enough and married. +5k Other quests ------------ Black iron ingots: unknown as of yet. Separate quest, rare monster drop, or a machine deep in the mines that processes iron ore into black iron ingots. Perhaps other things can be made out of those, too? silver clover necklace: note that the `enchant silver' spell allows transmuting a silver chain and a four-leaf clover into a necklace (perhaps the spell should take a parameter to specify what it operates on?) The jeweller in Tulimshar should simply provide an option to make silver necklaces from silver ore, hence providing the relevant component. Part II: Levels 4 and 5, and redemption ======================================= At this point, the paths truly fork: nature magic is no longer available to everyone. Specifically, there are two paths now: Path of nature -------------- Following Sagatha's path, the player can learn everything except for war magic level 5. The swords can only teach level 5 to those who have a `Rune of Destruction' (Grenxen's Rune), but Grenxen will refuse his powers to those who chose too peaceful a path. Path of control --------------- Sagatha will refuse to help those who follow this path. Similarly, Elanore will not teach healing magic level 5 to those on this path. Meanwhile, astral magic will become available through a new NPC (tentatively called the `teleport mage.' IMPLEMENTATION NOTE: make sure that players can't gain the benefits from one path and then convert to the other without penalties, especially in the light of the following: Redemption ---------- After receiving some player comments, I've concluded that it may be useful to allow players to redeem themselves (move control path -> nature path). Details are hazy, but this would involve sacrificing experience points to resurrect the mouboo and require working with Elanore. There is only one chance at redemption, though. Sagatha is not very forgiving. (Players need to go through Wyara to even get Sagatha to talk to them.) Where to get the higher levels ------------------------------ Levels 4 and 5 are acquired from the same NPCs: Astral: Teleport mage Nature: Sagatha War: Swords Life: Elanore Transmute: Auldsbel Quest ideas for level 4: Astral: Find the teleport mage ... Quest ideas for level 5: Astral: Travel to the astral plane and kill your first astral serpent (later on you can summon them) to gain astral essence Nature: Rescue a rare wumpus egg and give it to Sagatha (even though many other NPCs will make generous offers for it) War: Convince Grenxen to grant his powers into a rune of destruction for you. This involves creating another rune, invoking Grenxen's name (in a special place in Tulimshar). Grenxen will then outline the quest, which will involve killing and destruction. ... The teleport mage ----------------- The teleport mage lives in a tower, probably west and north of Hurnscald. The tower obviously has no above-earth entrance; `ascend' must be used from a dungeon below. Appendix: Spell table ====================== (This table may see extensions, especially if some of the temporary spells from part-0 are incorporated into levels 3, 4, 5.) Damage markers: `A/B/C per k' where A is minimum damage, B is avg. damage for player with max. int for that level, C is damage for spellpower 750. k here is the attack delay. For comparison: the fastest melee weapon (Setzer) has an attack delay of 600 (which means about 300 ms for Agi 99). Attack delays for magic are modified as for melee combat.
