Saturday, 20th June, 2026 ------------------------- We were in the shopping centre and so I went into the Apple Store. I knew what I was doing yet I still did it. We played with the Neo's. Felt like MacBook Pro quality to me and was a great feel to use and hold. Sigh. Am I buying one now? I just found out my T480 can install coreboot on the bios and so I could make it a Free as in glory to the RMS 😇. Involves flashing the bios with a clip thing. I actually have one from when I did the same to my X230 about 10 years ago. Funnily enough I was looking at X230/T420 etc. for a tinkering Linux laptop and then saw the T480 mod. I have a few T420 I'm watching on eBay but probably shouldn't bother. I just got rid of a bunch of thinkpads and don't need more. Quite often I think up good reasons to buy stuff: "oh this will solve problem x" or "now I'll be able to do y". I've not done a proper study but I feel like none of these are ever true in the end, and it's just me coming up with reasons why I should buy that thing. The classic is "once I buy this, then I'm set forever and never need to buy anything again". I know it's false. A guy at work and I joke about it with each other. He's a big runner (he's also tall), like marathons and competitions and always looking for ways to go running. He recently converted his garage into a gym or sorts with what sounds like the fanciest running machine in history. But you can't just get the running machine, you need the flooring, and lighting, and a TV, and then a way to stream things to do the TV, and fans and stuff to hide the other garage things, and repainting and and and and. All this is fine, as long as he uses it...which I think he does. But there's always more. Stuff begats more stuff. "So what's this problem you're solving?", I hear you ask. Well I want to buy a laptop so that I spend less time on the computer..."but you already have a laptop". Correct. "So...?". So maybe it'll break my habit of sitting down on the computer in the evening and doing nothing. Specifically, doing nothing useful. Endlessly scrolling reddit or YouTube because maybe something interesting will appear. Sometimes it does, but then it's boring, and so the scrolling continues. However, I'd still like to do things on the computer, like look up pokemon things on bulbapedia whilst playing on the DS, sat on the sofa. Or write up the family DayOne journal that I started 12 year ago, so I can print the books. I could do that on my phone but it gets annoying. I could do it with a Bluetooth keyboard but that doesn't involve buying a new computer. I shouldn't have gone into the Apple Store. I probably don't even like macOS. Five years ago, plus a bit, I bought my wife a journal book that's "some lines a day, for 5-years". Every page is divided up into 5 rows meant for that day each year. I just spied it across from where I'm sitting and flicked through it. She did 3 years. One of the year's she'd write a little note of what happened and then something she was grateful for. (⌒▽⌒)
