US Go Congress Day 6 / 2026 Jul 30 ---------------------------------- A rematch against Raymond Heitmann who I played in the Self Pair Tournament. I made a small mistake in the joseki - I felt something was amiss. I thought it might be a big issue, but both Kim Yoon-young and AI agreed that it was fairly minor when I reviewed later. The real problem didn't come till the early middle game when white invaded the upper right corner, a pattern that is very typical in the post-AlphaGo age where you play one of the star points. I tried to keep some territory but I should have just entered their territory instead and let them live small inside. Not a particularly hard sequence to remember. The end game remained very close, I was predicting a few points either way, but it was hard to get an accurate count with the clock ticking. Right before the very last moves of the game, Ray ataried a group of four stones but I ignored it since he had missed that I could kill half the board. Not the most exciting way to win, but c'est la vie. After lunch, Logan and I attended a really great lecture by Ryan Li on Go Seigen's jubangos against Sakato Eio and Kuranosuke Fujisawa. Go Seigen's commentary on his own games is what got me fired up about Go so many years ago, so for me this lecture was a historical treat. The night went long with the Pair Go tournament. It was fun to just wander around the tables watching the various games. There was also lot of review and chit-chat with various Go friends from NYC and elsewhere. 2 more games!
