6th November 2025 - Unihertz Titan 2 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I have long wanted a pocket terminal and had a few attempts. There was using a touch screen phone, touch screen tablet and the odd Blackberry clone of the Beepy. The touch screens are error prone and fairly unsatisfactory to use. The Beepy is good but I ended up getting the colour Beepy which uses a closed source driver which only works with a fairly old PiOs version. It is annoying and makes the device harder to deal with. However, it satisfies my pocket terminal desires. Well I had been considering the Unihertz Titan range for a while. They are large phones with physical keyboards. I just didn't bother going further as it involved dealing with well out of date Android versions and I was not sure about keyboard quality. Then I saw an advert for a crowd source campaign for the Titan 2. Well, of course I fell for it. I received the phone 2 days ago and I am impressed. It is like the Blackberry Passport. Wide, tall with a 1:1 ratio screen. The keyboard has 4 rows of keys. The top being function keys. There is a small second screen on the back of the phone which can be used for media controls, notification, the time and camera. There are 5 physical buttons on the side. Power/finger print reader, volume, screen control and a programmable other button. There is a cool function where you can use the keyboard as a touch pad. I like using this to scroll instead of the screen. There is also a tap to click feature of sorts. Otherwise, it is an Android phone. Works well and does all that side nicely. My only gripe is that the provided case feels a touch sharp edged and I would prefer a softer edge. Minor stuff. There is also a concern about updates not coming forth. Nothing new there for most mobile manufacturers really. As a pocket terminal, this works well. I run good old termux and mostly just use that to ssh into a cheap VPS I use or SDF's various servers. The keyboard has occasional missed key presses but nothing too bad. While it would be nice to have control, tab and escape keys, this is nothing too terrible. Termux allows for a touch screen row of these typically missing keys. I wish I could work out how to get the symbol keyboard working. I occasionally miss [ and ~ but this is not something I can't work around. I am appreciating the bigger screen compared to my Beepy. That and the battery use rate being visible. The battery is in the 5000mAh range which is great. I have used this with screen going to watch com while working all day and seen around 30% of the battery drained. Not bad stuff. If you want a pocket terminal which you can ssh into something more capable, this is a good option. I look forward to using this while out and about.
