October 23rd, 2015: So, I finally set wifi up on my Raspberry Pi. It took me a while to find the time, but as soon as I found myself with a bit of free time, I pounced! The setup was simple (a little editing of my .wpa-supplicant file) and I had the Pi online in no time. The Pi serves as a way to get Sigrid, my Model 4P, online. I typically SSH into my SDF account for everything, although I'm slowly starting to set the Pi up so I can do everything natively (web, usenet, mail, gopher, etc) without using SDF. Of course, I'm also setting Sigrid up so I don't have to use the Pi to do anything but communicate. But that's a story for The 4P Diaries. In other news, my Sparcserver 20 is toast. It developed a motherboard issue that I can't be arsed to troubleshoot. As I have a substantial amount of money and time invested in the machine, I'm in the hunt for a new motherboard. Hoping to track one down (inexpensively) in the new year. While the SS20 may be history, Slam's old Sparc IPC, long since given up for dead, is fully functional! Well, that may be a tad optimistic, but it powers up and I'm able to access the IDPROM via serial console. The IPC (hereafter known as Robusto) has a dead NVRAM chip, 24Mb RAM, and a hard drive of unknown size and content. I vaguely remember Slam fighting to install a particular OS on the thing, but that was over a decade ago and memory is short. I'll likely fool with Robusto this weekend, should I find the time. The first task will be to reprogram the IDPROM so I can at least get the IPC to boot. After that, I'll be able to tell which OS (if any) is on the machine. If nothing, I'll hunt down a few 30-pin SIMMs to expand the memory (48Mb max), then attempt to install an OS. Will probably try Solaris 2.6 first or, failing that, *BSD. After *that*, I'll have to figure out a use for the machine..
