The Backroad to Civilization October 28th, 2014: My revived interest in BBSes and the Usenet has lasted more than a couple of weeks! This is unusual for me, as I normally lose interest in things by this point... too many squirrels and shiny objects around. My interest in the Usenet has been held thanks largely to the efforts of one man, Randall Wood, creator of the dictator.* Usenet hierarchy and author of The Dictator's Handbook. He's been posting daily like a madman in comp.misc (and other groups) since the great Slashdot migration earlier this year (late last..?) and has been keeping things interesting... I really should follow his lead. The Usenet could use more on-topic discussions. I had a bit of fun in comp.sys.tandy this morning. Someone (probably a Google Grouper) had replied to a twelve-year old post, and two more people had admonished him for doing so. Ordinarily I'd "Skip to next unread post", but something in the quoted text caught my eye: "Conceited Jerk". Conceited Jerk has been my main nickname/alias for nearly twenty years... and sure enough, the thread being revived was one I'd started back in the early 2000s! The thread was about my Tandy 1500HD laptop which I'd acquired on eBay, specifically about replacement hard drives for the machine (the one inside the machine was dead). So, I posted a followup article in this twelve-year old thread, saying the machine sat buried in my basement since then, and was thrown out this past August while cleaning. 'Cause ya gotta have closure....
