The Backroad to Civilization October 17th, 2014: The *good ol' days* are back! As I've mentioned, I've been spending less time on the mainstream internet, and more time on the Usenet and BBSes. I've actually been following some discussions, participating in one or two, and checking in on a more regular basis. I've regained that sense of anticipation I had when I first started BBSing... wanting to check for new messages every few minutes! Of course, it would be pointless to check for messages more than once or twice a day. The BBS world seems to be limited to a few old diehards, a few of us who are returning to BBSing after a long absence, and the odd newcomer... thus the number of posts is minimal. There is still a substantial amount of activity in the Usenet groups I follow, unfortunately most of it is caught by my ever-expanding killfile for being crossposted, off-topic bullshit (kill all posts/subject lines containing Obama, Republicans, Democrats, Conservatives, Liberals, racial slurs, Christianity, Islam, and associated slang and abbreviations, and you'll be fine). My kill filter usually kills off 90% of posts (or more) in a given newsgroup, 99% of which was off-topic crap posted by mentally ill trolls. I have no idea what the shooting of Trayvon Martin has to do with home repair, and I don't care... I might miss the occasional meaningful post, but if it means not having to deal with crap, I'll risk it. I've also been participating in BBOARD here on SDF. Could really use a few more people...
