I wonder why? Why are you here? why am i here? Why are you browsing on gemini? Why am I creating .... this? Seriously, if I knew, I wouldn't ask. Why smolnet? If not us, who? If not now, when? ### update ## Really? Right in front of my bots? There seems to be some concern as to the presence of bots. I understand the value of authenticity. I cannot say that I completely understand the values of the smaller internet. I seached and all I can find is reference to a post from madsweeney. I read the ship of Theseus essay and it looks to be just some person generating ai slop. https://sava.rocks/blog/when-the-small-web-gets-an-ai-door/ it was this article that made me take a look and build a capsule. I've looked at gemini several times over the years but never went beyond installing Lagrange. Given all that, what is the greater concern, that the smolnet is mined and scraped? or that ai slop content is being posted? Clearly, somebody who thinks that posting a slop essay on gemini in hopes that people will read it and buy him a coffee or pay for it is laughable and shows so little insight in to the mechanism and culture of the smolnet, it boggles the mind. The question of the scraping and mining is a different issue. Is the desire to use the content to train? It's really snall and I wouldn't think there's really enough to train. is the there even enough content or is it unique enough to justify training? There's subreddits that are bigger than the smolnet. I don't think they want the content. It's more of a combination of curiousity and can they bridge this and on the other side, just apathy. They do not care that a generic crawler crawls this. They have no concern for rate limits and they do not respect robots.txt. Possbibly proxies like mozz are an unnecessary gateway that opens the door. I wish that it was as simple as just writing some nasty code to poison their data or simply being decent and respecting the robots.txt. ## Navigation => gemlog/ 📝 Field Notes & Gemlog => about.gmi 👤 About Me & Colophon ## Contact => mailto:sonatan@sdf.org 📧 Email: sonatan@sdf.org ## System Specs & Tools * Host: SDF Public Access UNIX System * Editor: vi only * Shell: bash * OS: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS * pronouns: HEE/HAW * Alignment: Chaotic Good --- => / Back to SDF Root
