28 November 2024 ================= Regarding EndlessOS everything worked like a charm, as i arrived at work the image creation tool reported that the download was successful and the media was created. I started the a reboot a few questions regarding localization and user account and that was it. Everything seems to work and i am pretty sure he will like the new system. I got FINALLY rid of the remnants of the flu (a really nasty cough), and now feel completely healthy again, wife and son still have it, but at least on juniors side it is getting better slowly. My wife on the other hand got worse again and had to take sick leave this morning. She wants to go to the doctor again and i hope he has some ideas... Yesterday evening i talked with a friend about a idea we had for a setting of a RPG or some short stories: A "not completely dystopic" post apocalyptical setting in europe. Just a few ideas: - About 5 - 10 years after $EVENT most big cities are more or less in ruins, national government mostly gone, so local communities interact with each other. - As the national power grid is also heavily damaged / destroyed power generation has to be local, using solar, wind but also diesel generators (those are dying out because of fuel is increasingly harder to get) - Transport is mostly by bicycle, old repaired cars (getting slowly phased out because of scarcer fuel) and hacked up golf cart like contraptions (easily chargeable by locally generated power) - Food is also produced locally, mostly no hunger due to fertile soil (as we have in this part of the world), but way less diverse than we are used to. Meat is available, but expensive. - The internet as we know it is gone, replaced by isolated local WiFi mesh networks bridged by sneaker net. - Computers have to be power efficient, so mostly old SBCs, hacked up old smartphones and the occasional old laptop or desktop PC where the needed power is needed and justified. As mentioned before the national grid is gone, so you have to expect frequent power outages if you don't have a local battery backup. - As the national government is gone the setting is political very diverse: You may have local communities run in an anarchistic syndicalized fashion, warlords, some "normal" democracies... Later this evening the thought catched me that it is somewhat weird doing world building for an RPG with a scenario that may be our actual future...
