I read a news article [ http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-13068924 ]
[bbc.co.uk] today showing that there is a visual trick that can drastically
reduce the amount of pain suffered by an osteoarthritis patient.  I
encourage you to read the article - it's quite neat.

I have heard of a similar trick used to treat phantom limb [
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantom_limb ] [wikipedia.org].  A patient who
has lost a hand, for example, could view the healthy limb in a mirror with
the injured limb behind the mirror.  By moving the healthy limb around and
watching it in the mirror, the patient can get visual feedback to help
relieve pain, tingling, or crushing sensations.

It's amazing to me how the mind can be tricked by the body and the senses,
and how a simple deception or illusion can impact the body so heavily.
