CURRIER ORCHARDS (Posted 2010-02-14 17:57:17 by ArchPaladin) I had been meaning to post this for close to six months now, but our camera had been lost with all the photos on it, so it didn't make much sense to. In the fall we have a usual tradition of going apple picking. This past year we decided to go to an orchard that we had seen signs for while driving around Merrimack. We had no idea what to expect. It turned out to be a little family-run orchard place with two small fields of apple trees hidden in the woods, with multiple species of apple trees laid out in the usual rows. There was a lot of people there (being apple picking season), and you could see a lot of kids running around with little red metal wagons that the owners had if you wanted to buy lots of apples and didn't want to carry your bags to and fro. The fields themselves were nice and secluded, and going from where we parked out to the fields made for a pleasant autumn stroll. We went there for Cortlands, although it was really late in the season for Cortlands, meaning (a) most Cortland trees were already picked, and (b) the remaining apples were starting to rot. We did manage to get a good bag of apples, although it took a lot of searching through their rows of trees and some careful maneuvering to pick the remaining good apples that were high up on the trees, which everyone else had passed up. More than once we had to either stack some crates up to get high enough, or one of us would sit on the other's shoulders to be able to reach around very horizontal branches. There was a main shed area where the registers was - it was the central hub for the owners and people looking to buy their apples. The shed had a lot of stuff in it - various fall fruits and vegetables, many different species of apples, home-jellied fruits and apple cider. They also had printed copies of old recipe books which were really cool to look through, although I have no idea where they got them. It turned out to be a really good outing. We actually had no idea what the name of the place was, and only caught a picture of their sign on the way out. Definitely a contender for next year's apple picking location.
