FABRICATION PART 2 (Posted 2009-02-19 18:48:34 by ArchPaladin) A number of years ago I wrote about home fabrication [ https://www.archpaladin.net/2007/05/04/home-fabrication/ ] [archpaladin.net]. I've been checking back in with the fab@home site. They appear to not have advanced much, which is sad to see. I've also found out about RepRap [ http://reprap.org/ ] [reprap.org], which appears to be the hobbyist model of choice for home fabbers, rather than the Fab@Home kit. Looking at the differences between the kits, RepRap appears to have a larger printing area, more contributors, and is more dedicated to the hobbyist mindset. There's also thingiverse [ http://www.thingiverse.com/ ] [thingiverse.com], which is dedicated to the sharing of digital blueprints for physical objects. As a tech guy who is primarily familiar with the software world, I find this last site particularly interesting. Nevertheless, I look at all this and I find it somewhat disappointing that the fabrication community moves as slowly as it does. I think there are a lot of confounding factors as to why that is, but not being involved in the community at all, I couldn't identify the greatest bottlenecks. It is still something I would like to try though. Perhaps one day when I have more time - say after graduation. If I do in fact have more time then. -------- There are no comments on this post.
