HOLT POND (Posted 2008-10-19 01:24:17 by ArchPaladin) My wife and I had about an hour in the middle of the day today before she went off to work, and we took advantage of the time to go romping around the backyard. By the backyard, I mean the woods and pond areas that are behind the house. We explicitly went because it was autumn and the colored leaves are out, but I took the camera along anyway. I didn't get to do as much exploring as I wanted to as this was a more impromptu journey, but was still good to get some pictures. Our destination was this one little rocky outcropping that affords a nice view of the bulk of the pond. A little ways back into the woods from this set of rocks is a larger firepit and some fallen logs that people have commandeered as benches. They have littered the place with aluminum cans and plastic bottles and such, but the rocks are very largely left alone. Most of the pictures I took are at this area. There is actually a lot to see back in this region. There is a reservoir for Pennichuck Water Works that I took a couple of photos for. There is also a series of trails all throughout the woods. Most just intersect with each other, and perhaps the only thing of interest that we could find last summer was a cell tower (I would like to get a picture of this too, but again - time). Also, Holt Pond itself is actually one of a set of four ponds (the Great Ponds?) in the area that Pennichuck uses for drinking water. At the intersection of each pond is supposed to be a damn of some kind - at least there is if the map isn't lying to me. I have yet to see any of these damns, and I would like to verify their existence. Perhaps most of all I would like to cross over to the other side of the ponds and explore the woods far out from the condo. We easily wandered into Merrimack went we went exploring last time, so I suspect something similar would happen were we to do it again. Sadly, most of this will have to wait until next year, probably in the summer. My wife had a really cool idea for a picture, but the batteries died just before she could take it, so that too will have to wait. Even still, it was still a good trip.
