JOB NEWS (Posted 2008-07-09 12:51:35 by ArchPaladin) So here's the big news. I have, in fact, found a new job. The company is called InterSystems [ http://intersystems.com/ ], and they are located in Cambridge, MA. The position is some form of Product Support position, which I think basically entails tier-3 support work (ie. a few positions above entry-level helpdesk). It's not been exactly what I've been looking for, but it pays the bills and should have enough flexible hours to allow me to get to class. I don't know how much actual development work is involved, but I suppose it's OK if there isn't much - this kind of position may do some bugfixes or incremental patches, but not much in the way of actual development. The world of entry-level development positions (ie. what I was going for) is quite rare considering that most of that work gets outsourced, or is obsoleted by regular use of third-party packages. I suppose as a whole I am neither excited or upset. I was looking for something that would pay the bills, give me a chance to learn some new technical skills, and enable me to get to and pay for my classes at NESA. All of those things I have obtained. I suppose what I was secretly hoping was that I would end up with a position similar to what I was doing at my current job - where I had the bulk of the responsibility for an area in a company - but given the amount of experience I have that is extremely unlikely. In truth, it's probably a good thing that I didn't get it, as I have motivations elsewhere. This has been one of the realizations that I've had while job hunting. I suppose this entire experience has been good, and I look at work a lot differently now than I used to. For everyone, sometimes jobs are a means to an end, and sometimes jobs are an end in themselves. Figuring out where a person strives in life allows us to distinguish between the two. -------- There are no comments on this post.
