FOOD RATIONING (Posted 2008-04-26 13:36:12 by ArchPaladin) Random good news up front...by way of raffle, I have won a free lunch for myself and up to 10 friends at On the Border at the south end of Nashua, on the 9th. The lunch can be either at 12 or 1. If anyone would like to come to a free lunch with me, please let me know. Ok. Did anyone know that apparently there has been instances of food [ http://business.theage.com.au/japans-hunger-becomes-a-dire-warning-for-other-nations/20080420-27ey.html ] [theage.com.au] rationing [ http://www2.nysun.com/article/74994?page_no=1 ] [nysun.com] in developed nations, and even in New England? This has apparently been going on for a little while now, but I've just started hearing about it now. On one hand, I find this a little startling because we don't really like to think that this kind of stuff can happen, but on the other hand, it only seems natural. Everything is connected to the price of energy. Oil prices go up (due to oil fields being out of commission), then transportation costs go up, which make food prices go up, because we don't eat locally. Combine this with any kind of weather and crop disaster and then we have major problems. Part of me thinks that a lot of this stuff gets downplayed because it's not overwhelmingly serious. We've tried to design our markets to withstand some variations and disasters, after all. But part of me (the conspiracy part, after all) wonders if this is rather quiet because the media want to downplay it. Whatever the case is, you can be assured that stuff like this will get more frequent, because energy prices certainly aren't going to go down significantly. Rather ironic then that I won a free lunch. -------- There are no comments on this post.
