To write my phlog posts I was using this old Acer laptop that was given to me some years ago. It's an Acer Aspire 3610. According to inxi, the specs are as follows: CPU: Single Core Intel Celeron M (-MCP-) 32 bits. GPU: Intel Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics RAM: 1GB Mobo: Acer Morar Date: 06/02/2006 This laptop has no screen. It was broken so I removed it. Instead of putting a new screen, I connected my old Philips 107E monitor. It's a CRT with more than 20 years that has been serving me very well along the years. At first I installed Antix Linux 23 and thought it would be good for this machine. But I was feeling it a bit slow and decided to install an old Debian version. But still no luck. It was even worse. Took forever to boot up and was laging in certain operations. As this is an offline machine just for writing, I wiped Debian 11 and installed Antix 17. Perfection. Now it works smoothly as I intended. Antix 17 has a different vibe from the newer version. I think part of the magic is that it's not trying to mimic modern systems and interfaces. It works fast and it works well, at least fot what I intend. Now I think I finally have a working writing machine. It will be mainly to write gopher phlog posts. I won't be able to publish them online though. I could write on my main machine, but this is a way to give use to this old machine and to write distraction free. One of the problems with many systems nowadays is that they are very dependent of an internet connection. Some linux distros, for instance, lack some packages that will make your life harder if you work offline. I think Antix is not the case. But my use case on this computer is very specific and does not imply being online. It's 07:40am. I woke up earlier than I expected. Got my morning espresso already. And I think it's going to be a great day. If you're reading this, I wish you a great day as well.
