Date: 2026.01.03 - Something New Trying something new out. I didn't really think that my prior gopher site was designed the way gopher ought be. Too many gophermaps to make links and things when it ought to focus more on text (and other) files. Another thing I wanted to change was the expectation that this was going to be updated daily. I can't even manage to update my personal journal with that kind of consistency, nevermind a blog. I'll just be posting when the spirit moves me, so to speak. So, here it is, my new attempt at a gopher site. Today's reading: Discourses 1.2.19-29 I was really impressed with Helvidius Priscus Well, when have I ever claimed to you that I'm immortal? You fulfil your role, and I'll fulfil mine. It is yours to have me killed, and mine to die without a tremor I was thinking, this is the kind of badass I want to be, someone who's integrity, honor, and dignity were not negotiable, and who could calmly look the threat of death in the eye and know that it changed nothing, that the only thing of value was how he determined his own choices. Tonight's reading: Meditations 1.6 Marcus thanks Diognetus for teaching him to avoid getting carried away by empty enthusiasms, and while I was wondering if it was my empty ehthusiasm or the enthusiasm of others, I came to the conclusion that it was my own I needed to watch for, given the examples to avoid in the passage. So, I have to ask myself, what is an empty enthusiasm, and what, if any, of my own would qualify as such? Another translation has it as idle enthusiasms, which gives me a bit better picture of what we are talking about. Maybe some of the stuff I do on the computer, like IRC or the stuff I read from my RSS reader? I'll need to think on this more, as I don't have so many obvious examples similar to the ones Marcus mentions.
