I don't know of any publication (online or printed) where you can find a listing of all the Hawaii radio and television stations in one place. These lists were compiled to offer you a one-stop place to see who is broadcasting what on each of the main Hawaiian Islands. Starting with this edition of the guide, I am also including a short news brief page in addition to the regular listings. These briefs outline recent news on both local radio and T.V. over the last three months. Much of the information is already common knowledge to most people living in Hawaii. For the visitor or newcomer, it could be an interesting sideline to the standard listings. Anyway, I hope you find these lists a valuable and interesting source of information. If you have any comments about the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide '95, or anything to say about radio and T.V. in Hawaii, please send them in. I will also accept press releases from radio or T.V. stations in Hawaii for possible inclusion into the next edition. For PC Computer users, I'd also like to know how this file showed up on your computer's word processor. How did the text look? Did the text wrap nicely without bad word breaks? Were the columns lined up in the radio and television listings section? Drop me a line because, I'd like to know. I made this up on a Macintosh computer and have no idea how good or bad it will play out on a P.C. You can send your correspondence and/or releases to: Hawaii Radio & Television Guide '95 Attn: Melvin Ah Ching, Editor 1560 Kanunu St., Box 816 Honolulu HI 96814-3203 E-mail: M.AHCHING1@GEnie.geis.com I look forward to hearing from you. ================================================================= Hawaii Radio & Television Guide * April 1995 * Version 1.6 ================================================================= [NEW] NEWS OVER THE AIR: Tidbits About Radio & TV in Hawaii Radio Free Hawaii Reincarnated After 5 Month Absence The wildly popular Radio Free Hawaii format on FM 102.7 was reincarnated on April 1. The free for all music format that is determined by listener voting through a weekly balloting system re-emerged after a five month hiatus. A recent financing deal cut with a mainland investor and station owners, Leow Broadcasting enabled the format to return. At precisely 12:01 A.M. strains of The La's 1991 hit "There She Goes" signaled the rebirth of the "Radio Revolution." Programming for the station more or less picked up from where it left off, offering listeners a wide variety of popular, eclectic and alternative music. The station first started in June 1991 and continued uninterrupted until last November when financial difficulties forced it off the air. During its first incarnation, Radio Free Hawaii achieved national recognition when it was named as one of the top 5 most popular radio stations in the nation according to a Rolling Stone magazine poll. KHNL TV News To Air Soon KHNL TV Channel 13 will soon be starting a state-of-the-art all digital local newscast. Their emergence into the highly competitive local news market dominated by long time network stations KHON, KITV and KGMB TV comes at a time when KHNL's current Fox affiliation is slated to be changed to NBC, due to the recent sale of current NBC affiliate KHON TV to a group of investors co-owned by Fox Broadcasting. Principal anchors for the upcoming newscast were announced in the local media recently. They include former KITV anchor Dan Cooke, former KITV sportscaster Robert Kekaula and most recently, State Corrections Department spokesman, Lyle Galdeira, who was formerly a KGMB TV reporter. The newscast is reportedly to be one of the first in the country to use all digital technology to deliver the news. The technology will utilize computers and discs instead of traditional videotape. Hawaii's "Smooth Jazz" Makes Debut On New Radio Station In February, KUCD FM 101.9 signed on the air with a new contemporary jazz format that features a touch of soft soul and Hawaiian music favorites. The music format has very little DJ chatter and a lot of emphasis on contemporary jazz music. CD 101.9 as the station is popularly known, emanates from Pearl City and is sister station to highly popular and successful KSSK FM & AM. KITV Channel 4 Starts Stereo Broadcasts ABC network affiliate, KITV Channel 4 recently started full time MTS Stereo broadcasts. They are the latest local broadcast station to jump on the already more than 10 year old stereo TV standard. The switch to stereo broadcasting brings the number of stereo broadcast TV stations up to three. KHON Channel 2 and KFVE Channel 5 have long been broadcasting in stereo since the late 1980s. Oceanic Cablevision Adds New Channels Over the first 3 months of this year, Oceanic Cable, Oahu's largest cable TV service provider, recently expanded their channel carrying capacity. As a result a number of basic cable channels have been added to the service, including CNN International, TV Food Network, and E! Entertainment. Several other channels went to full time service instead of a shared channel and part-time service. In March Oceanic also added new pay-per-view channels and a new Value Plus Service into the Mililani and Wahiawa areas. These new Value Plus services which include Bravo, ESPN 2, Travel Channel, Sci-Fi Channel and the History Channel will be made available to the rest of Oceanic's service area over the next year as the system is upgraded. Subscribers pay an added fee for both value plus and pay-per-view services on top of their normal monthly rates for basic and standard cable service.
