=== WHY GOPHER EXPERIENCE IS SUBPAR=== Provocative title but what can I do? It's late and I am tired and just want to write something to relax and let my thoughts roam. I've been thinking about some reasons why my particular experience using gopher has not been as nice as I'd wish it could be: 1. People. We are lazy, we do things and then drop them and forget about them or do them in manners that are subpar. There are so many zombie blogs of the type "hello world" and then nothing. I do it too, yes, where I open a project and then forget about it or do not update it for weeks or months but gopher is small enough that it is noticable. 2. Lack of sufficient quantity of diverse weighty content unique to gopher and instead a lot of fluff and pure subjectivism. Nothing wrong with that per se; my hole is also like this but what is to actually make gopher meaningful as a real alternative to http/s? == WHAT COULD BE DONE == 1. write quality work that is unique to gopher - i.e. don't republish/mirror in other places. 2. more is not better; better is better. I should like to see longer work that is not just a braindumb (though there's space for that too) but is a result of longer thought process. 3. if you're in a habit of sharing stuff online and it's not against your need for privacy, then share gopher links with short instruction on how to access them in various ways. 4. maybe link more also on your gopher to other articles/holes that you like. It can help others who already use gopher to discover quality stuff. Given all that, I am sure most people don't want to think about how they're shaping the contemporary gophersphere and experience for others. Sometimes you are just tired and want an outlet. I get that. Well, here I am speaking nonsense which just illustrates the point. Maybe gopher is rather for most users some substitute for social media? Thanks for reading.
