USE CASE FOR GOPHER =================== I need to figure out exactly what draws me to using gopher before I start writing here. So this is a kind of meta article, or rather, a brainstorming session. I am sure that things might change over time but that cannot be avoided and having some clarity, even if provisional, is better than having none. 1. I WANT TO TREAT THIS AS A SEMI-PRIVATE INTERNET JOURNAL - there is no way someone from my immediate surrounding will come across it - even if they ever did they would not connect it to me, most likely We don't need to spill the beans and always tell everyone what we're doing. There's a passage in the Bible that should be more taken to heart. "Have you heard something? Let it die with you. Be brave, it will not make you burst!" Sirach 19:10 Yes, the passage is about not spreading rumour (quite humorous too) but it can be applied to oneself also in that we don't need to announce everything we do as if the pressure of sharing should make us explode. We live in a world that encourages exhibitionism and lack of discretion. I will not speak of anything deeply private as such things should probably not be published without deep reason and after deliberation. I am not in such a miserable position in life to need to share on internet what should be shared with select few confidants in one's life. By writing here I can share my thoughts that I probably would not be able to find an outlet for in the world and I do not have to worry if someone's interested, or if someone agrees, or if they're offended. I could just keep the journal wholy local and private. Yes. And I have such journals also. So in reality, this is not much of a journal as I think of it. 2. PRESERVATION OF THOUGHTS I do not publish this on my server ( I have an idle site siting on gopher://gopher.labunix.xyz) but on SDF for a reason. I still need to figure that one out butI will almost certainly make it mirror my gemini capsule. I want tokeep this one here for something different. The advantage of having it outside my own infrastructure is that if something happens to my server this one should persist regardless. So here I want to do something that I want to last a long time instead of just ad hoc entries. Hence this brainstorming. Anyway, preservation of thoughts... I could not preserver my thoughts through a number of distractions. So much for that. Funny brain stuff. In theory my harddrives and backups could all die at once in some accident or be lost or stolen. Then I would have my glorious gopher hole to console me as I try to put my digital life back and cry over hundreds of hours that I have spent to configure my laptop and server to perfection and wonder how to recover stuff from remote repositories, etc. Haha, yes, the gopher hole would definitelly cheer me up. 3. DIVISION OF LABOUR So let's think how to divide this stuff. I don't want to spread myself too thin. Here's what I have: 1. hugo website --> https site for unix related articles. (articles) 2. wikijs site --> serving technical info for the hugo site. (setups/configs) 3. onion and i2p sites --> mirrors for hugo site (mirrors) 4. gemini capsule --> site dedicated to internet addiction 5. my gopherhole --> mirror of the gemini capsule 6. this SDF.org gopher site --> ??? So I have clarity as to 1-5 and now need to think about 6. Here we go: A) I know I want this place for loose, ad hoc short writting (phlog) B) I know that I want to also write about other things than unix (articles) C) I want to do a separate directory with moments from life of a little man so that he can one day look at it. That's plenty to do for now! Lets see how it goes. One learns by doing.
