In short, it establishes a context for learning from which to teach within that is relevant. Those skills learned are transferable to different cases, and I think will be more likely to remembered, rather than homework and testing which is quickly forgotten. - Summary Well, school have curriculum.* Its based on a "bucket theory of mind."* Stuff it in. They're trying to improve it and I give credit for their trying.* They're making steps to try to improve rational thinking skills, although I don't agree with their methodology. But the disassociated nature of education is bothersome.* It's boring.* It's boring because it's irrelevant to interests.* It's boring because there's no reason to care except grades.* Get the grades, move on, forget the material and thinking required. What I'm thinking about wouldn't change what is being taught.* They can continue experimenting with different underlying methodologies for teaching mathematics and English and social studies and all of those things, like they have been. But the main shift of focus would be being engaged.* Feel a need to be there. The new theories and the learning of "what already works and is known" will necessarily come together because the end product is something novel - a solution to an existing problem - or at least an attempt of it. "Billy and Sally leave the train station at 7:43am and 7:37 respectively.* Billy goes west at 57 km/h and Sally goes East at 21 m/h.* How many miles away from origin point will Billy be when Sally is 38.5 km away?* What time will it be?" This is the kind of question they ask now.* Mix up.* Confuse.* Unrealistic.* I know what they're trying to get at, but I think education could do better.* A lot better. Within each real world problem that is difficult for adults to solve, there is a simplified University education along with years of relevant work experiences compressed within it, that have to be UNROLLED - decompressed - made flat, simplified, taught, explained, learned, before they can tackle the issue. it might take students and teachers weeks and months to get to a point where they can attempt to come up with a solution to the problem, because there is a lot of background that has to be covered... background that covers all of the areas of school they would go through anyway.. but tailored for this particular situation. Those skills learned will be transferrable - and most importantly REMEMBERED... because it was a case that they were involved in that mattered. in some level. "Oh, this is just the time we were working on the case of....." etc. - same way that Doctors and Lawyers are taught at advanced levels.* It obviously works as an educational model.* We already use it.
