I'm using the analogy of a lightning bolt. the ionized charges
   meet up to the lightening bolt and encourage it to come down. a
   path is created first and the bolt tries its best to go down it,
   using a searching pattern until it reaches the destination. The
   ground intends for the lightning to find it."
