Another Halloween, come and gone. Kinda sucks the spooky month only lasts but for a single one, according to most. If it were up to me, it wouldn't end until December. I like Christmas as much as the next guy, jolly little holiday, really wish it wasn't trying to overtake the other months. Digression aside, I've recently seen the Kickstarter for "It's Bunlith: The Witch Upstairs". On an external embed on Discord, as I can't imagine Bluesky being anything but a cesspit of politically motivated violence and shipping slapfights right now. I have... very mixed feelings. On one hand, it's hard NOT to be a little impressed of the dedication, at least for me anyways. New webseries are hard to come by this day and age, and most of them... really just aren't up my alley. On the other... I've got my thoughts. Galavanting in the cheesiest goth cosplay known to mankind? Eh, whatev, I've seen worse, spend your time how you'd like. Having the main character be a thinly veiled, if at all, stand-in for the creator? Just how it is these days, really. Choosing to surround yourself in pride flags 24/7? It's Bluesky, that sorta behavior comes with the territory. The whole "no cops at pride" thing? The creator's CHOOSING to stay at Bluesky, see previous point. None of those really bother me that much, even if I have heavy disagreements. My main problem with Bunlith is that a series made by someone with what I can only presume are hardline, socialist pride-month, glitter-soaked political viewpoints... how exactly can you keep one going without someone figuring out all the plot beats? I've had an extremely similar problem with Cruelty Squad, in that any work that prides itself as being anti-capitalist has only one real plotline to speak of. The not-money people have to work for a small money, they are downtrodden and sympathetic. The money people just sit around in giant tubs of gold all day, they are evil. Anyone inbetween are either disposable, and/or completely retarded. There might be a small(?) bit of leeway in the stories that could be told from this, but a lot of the major beats are the same: * Company is actually complete evil! * Sympathetic character is being overworked! * Upper mangagement? Logistics? What the hell's that? * Conservative person/parents/whatever are pure EVIL! * Character is being VAGUELY ROMANTIC and SEXUAL (but not for those icky men >:( ) * "Why must I have to work to get food?" * "Bottled water is the embodiement of pure evil!" * Men are stinky and terrible, and women are always at peace with each other, y'see? * Money = evil, don't you know? (Money moved up in the world; Now it's ALL the evil instead of just the root!) * We could be living in a utopia right now, but don't ask me how we'll get to that if Viva La Revolution happens. Likewise, you can kinda figure out (broadly) the pecking order of the characters, especially for an anti-captitalist work: On the top, the creator and their avatar(s). Directly below, analogues of the characters they identify with. Below that, their friends, or anyone sympathetic enough to the cause. Next down, anyone stupid enough to have some form of use for the cause. Making up the majority of the totem pole are the Average Joes, pretty much an empty block of wood. (can be mutilated and modified to suit the work's needs) Entering the totem pole slums, first lies the average joes who aren't useful enough to the cause. Below that, pretty much every single major person UNsympathetic to the cause. Then, depending on who's in charge, the current administration (and any related employees) And finally, at the absolute bottom, are the meme lolcows and anyone the creator(s) broke up with. I can't imagine Bunlith having any solution to any of this, even if it wanted to. The only real way I can see that show trying to garner any sense of intrigue and mystery is to be as opaque as possible about every single detail the view might have any passing interest in... which come to think of it, is kinda what Cruelty Squad does too. Don't know how to come up with any plotline other than "corpo bad"? Just smother the whole thing in vague metaphor and nonsensical imagery your way to a non-revalation! That, or drag out the plotline for as humanly long as possible. Make sure to pad the already thin plot with low-effort yuri implications for maximum brownie point have. And hey, why not attach a ticking timebomb to any relationship that happens to appeal to the "doomed yaoi/yuri" crowd. But for all the gripes I have, my main one is just that... I've probably already seen it before. The details could be different, there might be focus on a few beats instead of others, but I'd be extremely surprised if Night In the Woods doesn't make up a major part of Bunlith's family tree. That, and it's kind of a self-defeating proespect to make a webseries when your ideology forbids escapism, since most of that's gonna boil down to "Viva La Revolution, what we do after that... uh...". A little pre-emptive, sure, but could you REALLY imagine a content creator publically saying "No cops at pride" and "Free Palestine", having the Philly pride flag AND the trans flag, and from vague memory, speaking pretty badly about company policy to NOT be a socialist, let alone a staunch free market advocate? They probably do exist somewhere, but it sure as hell ain't Bluesky. If people like this... eh, I'm sure it appeals to someone out there, I wouldn't be surprised. But I'd imagine those same people also probably like BDSM to a downright unhealthy degree.
