## 24 Impostor Impostor like in "Impostor Syndrome". I must admit I'm suffering of that syndrome in a big part of my work. If I'm sometimes cited as an example by some of my colleagues, I am not confident in my own abilities and in what I know. Now that I have new responsabilities in my lab, I must manage the team and validate some documents in areas I don't yet fully understand... Or that I believe not fully understanding. But with the arrival of a new measuring machine, and without having trained on it, I have a strange feeling : I have found in a half day the solutions for issues that all my colleagues didn't find in a week. But that's perhaps a matter of habit. I enjoy signal processing and defining automatic interpretation models. I'm often doing it with functions in Excel (and never Visual Basic...) but this time it's inside a proprietary software with a specific way to do it. You have to define parameters, coordinates and you use it with sometimes dependancies between the parapeters. For example, you must define an area where you will detect the maximum in the Y-axis. And then another one after reaching the minimum again,etc...Quite easy in Excel and I have the same type of treatment with electrical charge curves. But I had to understand the software and the objects, icons...2 hours and then a method to define the manualy the maximum, just to see if the calculations are OK...It worked but I needed to detect the start, the end of the signal and each area. Another 1 hour work on it and it's done. And I love that...more than coding, ha ha. I can see that one of my colleagues (the younger!!) wants to work as with the old machine that did this type of measurement. But with that one, you could do in 5 minutes the work that took sometimes 2 or 3 days. So it's very interesting to take some time to understand and to program this automated process. I can see that the impostor syndrome decreases ...but there's a problem of negativity with that colleague. I must work on it too...We are loosing time and I don't want him to feel also like an impostor. The good thing is on another work, he learned it quite quickly with my documents and just a demonstration at the start. That's perhaps because he's to confident in Tech and that I'm not...or not too much. I kept a lot to do myself before and after measurement, as usual. I've only one machine with a fully automated treatment. And you guess ... There are always issues because of human incidents (someone used the car during the measurement, or unplugged the car...) I have just passed an internal test of AI in my company. I'm not an impostor on that subject because of my little knowledge. But when I hear the former French prime minister talking about it, I'm sure that he is an impostor without any syndrome for that ! 2DÉ› => mailto:icemanfr@sdf.org Comments by mail or by a reply on your blog
