Something Blue - Papa Joe Kinda Tawny Kinda_Tawny.wav Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry, and I've got the blues. Amanda Amanda.wav Makin Whoopee Makin_Whoopee.wav Yes, we're featuring Mr. Joe Lee tonight. Papa Joe died in Jonesboro on May 19, 2013. He was a true music legend who spent his life playing and promoting the music of Northeast Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta. That was Joe singing the jazz standard, "Makin' Whoopee". Before that we heard two songs he wrote, "Kinda Tawny" and "Amanda". Joe played everything from rock and blues to jazz but his first love was always jazz. Something Blue is broadcast on KASU, 91.9 FM and streaming on the internet at kasu.org. I'm Hairy Larry and it means the world to me to be able to bring you the music of the legendary Joe Lee. Lisa Ahia sang this next song at his funeral. Joe played it on the tenor sax. Here he is now, at his best, playing "That's All". Thats All Thats_All.wav Sweet Lorraine Sweet_Lorraine.wav And that was Joe Lee singing "Sweet Lorraine". Whether it was vocals, piano, sax, or flute, Joe had the chops. One of the highlights of Joe's musical life was sharing the stage with Dizzie Gillespie when he was playing with the Jonesboro Jazz Society big band. Before the show Joe told Dizzie that they were going to do one of his songs. What a thrill it must have been when Dizzie walked onstage during Joe's solo to take a turn. Here's the Jonesboro Jazz Society Big Band with guest trumpeter, Dizzie Gillespie, doing "Manteca". It's Joe Lee and Friends playing a Joe Lee original, "Boppin' At The Forest". Joe helped me start Blues Fest at Craighead Forest Park and he titled this piece based on the good feelings we had out there. One year we even had an Alley Records reunion. Now here's Terrence Blanchard with Ron Carter on bass and Ravi Coltrane, sax, playing "Don't Run".
