Something Blue - Andy - January 31, 2015 Andy Cohen - Oh, Glory How Happy I Am, The scred songs of Rev. Gary Davis Rev. Dan Smith Rev. Gary Davis James Brewer Andy Cohen - Children of Zion Welcome to Something Blue. I'm Hairy Larry and I've got the blues, for you. Andy Cohen - Oh Glory, How Happy I Am Rev Dan Smith Babylon is Falling All right now. We kicked it off with Andy Cohen playing two Rev. Gary Davis songs, "Children Of Zion" and "Oh Glory, How Happy I Am". Andy is an amazing guitarist who used to play with Rev. Davis and still plays his style of music today. Then we heard "Babylon Is Falling" by another blues/gospel musician that Andy used to play with, Rev. Dan Smith. This whole show is dedicated to the music that Andy Cohen is preserving, music Andy learned by getting to know and playing with these great gospel bluesmen. Rev. Gary Davis is famous for his fingerpicking style and his sacred music but he was also up for having a good time once in a while and entertaining the audience. Here he is now playing "Hesitation Blues". Then we will hear another of Andy Cohen's cohorts, Blind James Brewer, a famous Maxwell Street performer who sang blues and gospel and was seriously underrecorded. He's going to sing "I'm So Glad Good Whiskey's Back". Rev Gary Davis - Hesitation Blues Blind James Brewer - I'm So Glad Good Whiskey's Back Andy Cohen - Andy Cohen - Crucifixion If I Had My Way - Rev Gary Davis Rev Gary Davis - Death Don't Have No Mercy Now that's what I'm talking about, Rev Gary Davis doing his song "Death Don't Have No Mercy". Before that he sang "If I Had My Way" also known as "Samson and Delilah". And before that Andy Cohen sang a Rev. Gary Davis song, "Crucifixion". Rev. Gary Davis was an important figure in twentieth century American music. His amazing three part fingerpicking has inspired many guitarists and his haunting gospel songs were always delivered with faith and belief. I would like to thank the Brookland Methodist Church for encouraging me to bring Andy Cohen and other musicians to our Wednesday night contemporary worship. There's no music like live music and we have live music as part of our contemporary worship every week. Closing the show here's Rev. Gary Davis singing "Lord Stand By Me". Then we'll hear Rev. Dan Smith play "Go Ye and Preach My Gospel" and then Dan Smith and Bessie Jones will sing "Something Down in Me". Until next time this is Hairy Larry reminding you once again, blues is the mainstream.
