I drank my coffee, nervously, trying not to look at him but then he sat down in Abriel's chair. I only spilled a little coffee in my lap as I looked up. Abriel was right, he had a spectral nature. His skin was luminescent and since he wasn't covered in bats I could see right through it into nothing. He did have bats peeking out from his pockets and behind his collar. Believe me, I was freaking out. He spoke so slowly and in such a low tone I could hardly make out the words. "I saw you in the park. You thought you could escape. You will never be safe again. The bats have your number." and he droned on. I saw Abriel creeping up behind him but I didn't look at Abriel. I looked straight into the spectre's face as if I were hypnotized when Abriel picked up a chair and swung straight for his head. Just as the chair was about to hit him the spectre turned and looked straight at it. The chair passed right through him. Posted by hairylarry - posted on 2018-06-09 at 19:17 Central Time. "Relax." Abriel said quietly. "We're safe for the moment." The waitress who brought our decanter of coffee and two cups smiled brightly at us as she sat them on our table. "Would you like anything else?" she asked. As I was about to say no Abriel spoke up, "Would you by any chance have a map of the park we could see?" he asked. "Of course" she responded. "We are swamped though so it might be quicker if you just stepped into the lobby and picked one up." Abriel nodded, "That's great." he said. When she walked away he asked,"You okay?" I nodded my head trying to appear calm. "I'm going to go get a map and I want you to sit here, drink your coffee and wait for me. Can you do that? When I nodded again he stood up and left. The place was loaded with more transports than I had ever seen before. I mean were they hauling in every jazz fan in the town? As we sat there waiting I saw them pulling Jack Kumakis out of a wagon and hauling him inside. Why on earth was he here? Jack is a has been, I hadn't seen him in at least two years. Not to discount him, he's a fine musician, but he just can't keep his act together if you know what I mean. The doors on our wagon were wrenched open and we saw three officers and a short chubby guy who looked less than happy to be here. He ran his eyes over us and spoke in a low voice to the cops before walking away. "Okay you bunch, out of the wagon." the cop with the most hardware snarled. "Make it quick," he added. I looked at Jonas for a clue, but he just shrugged and started toward the door pulling me along with him. "She with you?" the cop asked as we jumped down. "Yes" Jonas said taking my arm. The trumpet was hot and the sax was cool, if you know what I mean. The drinks were weak but whiskey is whiskey and eventually it started to work. I sat in the back corner surveying the scene. I saw a few hot guys but none of them were my type. Then Jonas came over and asked me to dance. Now Jonas has been my on again off again for a few years and I thought he had finally landed with Millie but I guess not since I saw Millie draped all over some new guy in the middle of the dance floor. I looked up at Jonas and said, "Why not?" as I stood to dance. It was then the cops hit the place and there weren't enough back doors to let everybody out. So Jonas and I ended up in the back of a paddy wagon on the way to the station. I figured they'd just let us go. We weren't nothin' and we weren't doing nothin'. Just out dancing. I guess I was in for a surprise. Posted by hairylarry - posted on 2018-06-05 at 19:27 Central Time. We couldn't lean against the walls for whatever horrible reason Abriel couldn't explain to me and it was uncomfortable sitting in the middle of the room so we lay down and eventually fell asleep. I don't usually remember my dreams but I was being swarmed by bats when I woke up to see Abriel standing at the window watching the sun rise over Central Park. There were no bats. I was oh so glad to see the sunshine. Abriel shushed me and said, "We can't really talk here. Let's go get some coffee in a very public place. That ought to be safe enough." By then I knew better than to question him so I just followed him down the stairs and through the park. After a few blocks he led us to a coffee shop with outside tables, we ordered and sat down waiting on our coffee. Maybe now I would get some answers. Or at least some coffee. We had garden trowels, paint brushes, a hammer, and a bucket. And Sally brought her digital camera. The woods were different but the hills were the same and I led Sally directly to the place where Paw Paw and I used to sit on his log. It was gone, probably rotted, but there was another one just about 10 yards away and we sat down to catch our breath. "Let's start where Paw Paw's log used to be.", said Sally. So I walked over and got my bearings. "I remember that big old tree with the funny knot. And I remember that rise, there. I'm sure this is where the log used to be." I reached down and slowly lifted the leaves. We watched for bugs and Sally took closeup pictures. We got down to dirt and worms and we looked carefully at every rock but we didn't see any fossils. Then Sally pulled a big round rock out, about the size of a softball, the same color as the fossil. She carried it over to the log and hit it with the hammer. Close. I guess it's better to be slowly spiraling out into a slightly larger orbit than to be plummeting toward the atmosphere. Check the fuel. Ok there. For now. I mean I can't get home but at least I can maintain orbit. Still no sign of my rendezvous. They were supposed to be here yesterday. Just as well I guess. Haven't really finished my reconnaissance. Back to work. Mountains, rivers, oceans. All these planets start to look the same after awhile. Now I know why they don't recommend solo flights. My partner got sick and they sent me out anyway. Talking to myself. But I'm not insane. I'm ok. I just have to keep my balance. Now, where's that rendezvous. Posted by hairylarry - posted on 2018-06-03 at 18:50 Central Time. And right out on a table there was a big bunch of yellow bananas. Just the kind I like. Twist my arm why don't ya. I grabbed them up and went in to pay the grocer. Somebody had my number. This isn't the first time. It happened before too. Once I was just about to run out of gas. I looked down at the needle sitting below E and I looked up and there was a gas station! Now how did they know my needle was below E? And how did they get that gas station there just when I needed it. That's the hard part. Tracking my gas usage is easy peasy compared to making gas stations appear out of nowhere just to make a sale. Anyway, back to the yellow bananas. They were delicious. Yawning I walked into the living room thinking about making coffee. Uh oh, I thought. There was Fred. And there was Fred. And there was me. And there was me. I had to sit down. Fred was arguing with himself. I've seen him do that a lot but usually there was only one of him arguing with himself. You know the normal way. "I should do this. No I should do that". I jumped to my feet. "Shut up!" I shouted, "Just do something." Everyone looked at me like I was crazy. In fact I think I was crazy. They weren't even arguing about what to do. That was all in my mind. In fact I was beginning to think they were all in my mind. I mean, first they were in my dream and that was in my mind. Now they're all here. Probably still all in my mind. I went to sit down but I was already sitting there. I looked up at me. "If you move you lose." Posted by hairylarry - posted on 2018-06-03 at 17:11 Central Time. Then she slapped the wad of chewing gum over the hole and the cold of space immediately froze it into place. She grabbed a roll of duct tape from her utility belt and duct taped a nice X over the patch. Speaking into her log she added "Standard emergency patch, chewing gum and duct tape." "That was close." she thought. "If that hole had been a half inch bigger the air would have sucked the gum right out into space and there would have been a Madge patch duct taped to the wall." "Navigation report!" said the Captain. "We've got problems." said the navigator. "You know that little asteroid that just punctured Madge's cabin? Well, it's mama is following right behind." Madge looked out her porthole and sure enough. There was one mother of an asteroid heading straight at her. She didn't know what to do so she crawled under the bed. Her whole cabin shook when the asteroid hit. Posted by hairylarry - posted on 2018-06-02 at 23:22 Central Time.
