I'm generally against the use of AI, from the energy hungry resource, to alienating people, creating more content that we could ever need to numb our society even further. In the recent days, I've seen an interesting reversal of power. AI in the hands of programmer reverse engineering the world. Adobe being one of the first target. A programmer re-created the suite in Rust. Explaining his understandable frustration with Adobe. Then came the Sony PS5. Which has been hacked again and again, proving how enjoyable the device could be without all it's corporate limitation. Now I'm observing the blooming of a simple synth, the FM-1 from M-Vave. I am unsure if it was goal of the company, but the firmware was easy to reprogram I assume, because at the time of writing this, there are over 37 firmware available for the device. Transforming the instrument in any instrument you can think of. Using AI to code a musical instrument, okay, I have to try it out now. Everything is being reverse engineered, and the consumer is telling the market: "What you are offering us isn't that special anymore, we can make these ourselves, and if you try to lock us down in some leasing or software limitation, we'll hack it" How will the market react? You cannot software lock a device anymore. I wonder how long before they use AI to fix their John Deer tractor. The market can counter attack, using AI to lock their hardware even more. Which will end up being very costly, and the hackers of the world will have too much fun trying to unlock these device each time. Or the market can re-adjust its position. You can't lock a whole culture down that uses tools as powerful as AI. So you better work with it. Create tools that are easy to hack and unhack. Focus on quality of the hardware. Contribute to the open source projects. Create standards that everyone use, both hardware and software. There could also be more law being passed on the criminality of using AI. Making it illegal to run local models. Locking the online models so they can't be used for software development. But I am not sure how quick the market can turn around. I wonder how deep of a cut the use of AI will do in our consumerist market?
