We spent the weekend camping just a couple of miles from downtown Floyd, VA. Downtown is a relative term as Floyd is a literal one stoplight town. However, for a town with 440 residents, Floyd punches way above its weight in entertainment. On Friday evening there were 3 Americana/Bluegrass jam sessions on the streets, plus live music at the artisan's market, plus 2 venues with touring acts and cover charges. I was told it was a slow evening. Did I mention this is one stoplight town with a population of 440? Every shop we went into ended with us in a conversation with the shop owner, whether we bought anything or not. It's like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting, but with banjos and fiddles. And hippies. Lots of hippies. SW Virginia in general is red America, but Floyd is very much a blue oasis in a sea of red. It's definitely a place to visit if you get a chance. There are not many places like it left, at least not in the Mid-Atlantic area.
