date: Sat 17 May 2025 05:48:51 PM PDT subj: newborn twins interactions, detecting parents, diapers ------------------------------------------------------------- Its interesting to witness newborn twins in the same space. I have a boy and a girl in the same room. Science says many things about people and newborns, what they know, are aware of, all sorts of things, watching them as a parent with my ego and belief system I can't always reconcile what science says. When the twins are sleeping what is known as active sleep, a type of sleep newborns do that almost seems like they are awake. They kick their feet, throw their hands up, and make noise. With my twins there seems to be a feed back between them. One twin will make a noise, then the other will follow. They both seem asleep to me. I think they are awake, or waking up, but then I go to check on one of them; sure enough, asleep. I've even touched them but see no response to my touch. They do this for about an hour with each other. The baby eeeeh, a couple seconds later the other baby says eeeeh. Back and forth they do this with each other. Going in to check on them: My wife or myself will try and enter the room quietly, certainly quite enough for an adult not to be aware of someone entering the room, but the moment one of use gets close to their crib, they say eeeeh or rrrrrah. *** Changing the baby: Here is something interesting. Newborns from the NICU don't like having their clothes taken off. They are fine until their legs get touched, then its bad. I wonder if its just because its colder, or due to all the pokes on their feet for blood glucose checks. They are usually upset when changing them enough to make it difficult. They bring their legs close to their body, then push them back. Funny if for any reason they pause for a moment, this is a WARNING!!! they are going to pee. Be prepared for their subtle change in behavior. As a parent you don't get but a moment to detect this. Have a regular pile of wash clothes ready, and if your newborn is a boy, always, always have that wash cloth over their private parts because they are likely going to pee all over the clean diaper, their clothes, and the changing table.
