Someodd's Diggings
Last year I was lucky enough to get to know Someodd (someodd.zip), a
brilliant young woman with a strong interest in Smolnet/Gopher related
things. When Joy and I went to San Francisco Someodd took several days
to show ups around, and it was a completely wonderful experience.

Someodd has produced a LOT of amazing online tools (both Gopher and, ugh,
that "Web" thing), one of which is "diggings."

(that link occasionally comes up blank for me, in which case just go to
gopher://gopher.someodd.zip:70/ and scroll down to "Fun 7oys" and
beneath that "Dig for gold in gopherspace.")

Diggings introduces a meta-layer on top of Gopher, allowing Someodd to
"gamify" gopher by awarding "gold" for discovering new Gopher resources. 
Possibly more importantly, Diggings provides a commentary thread
to every page, allowing Diggers to discuss the gopher page in question.

I really like this because it helps connect Gopher users to each other 
and illuminates not only new places in Gopherspace, but the people using
the tool. 

It's a little tricky to understand and set up, but once you've got it in 
place you can surf the Internet on Internet Gopher, collecting gold and
chatting with other Gopher users.
