Questions, comments, and registration should be send to . The following text is from the ReadMe. -gd] TEXT documents created on a DOS-based machine or a mainframe are invariably formatted inappropriately for use on a Macintosh. They often contain unnecessary control characters, carriage returns, the wrong kind of quotation and apostrophe marks, and so forth. Manually reformatting these documents can be a tedious and time-consuming task. Add/Strip (A/S) has been designed to automatically perform much of the work of cleaning up TEXT files destined for import to page layout, word processing, database, or spreadsheet programs, as well as export from these programs to a DOS-based or mainframe computer. All in a fraction of the time needed to manually reformat using a word processor. [...] Add/Strip is Shareware. This means that if you use it, you should pay for it. Registering users receive a disk with the latest version (and a few other goodies), printed documentation, and may use future versions at no additional cost. Registration is $25. Please see the enclosed docs for more details. Some of the many features: - Powerful. Alpha uses Dr. Ousterhout's Tool Command Language (Tcl) as a scripting language. Tcl is rapidly becoming a popular extension language over many different hardware platforms. - Customizable. Any function or keystroke sequence can be bound to any key, menus are completely user-specified and modifiable. - Emacs-ish. Alpha supports many of the key bindings and central concepts of GNU Emacs. It is not a port, however, and uses a Tcl instead of LISP as an extension language. - Multi-modal. Alpha supports mode-specific: bindings menus keyword colorizing - Interoperable. Alpha allows user scripts to build and send arbitrary AppleEvents. Currently, the default configuration of Alpha inter-operates with several different compilers, including CodeWarrior and Symantec C/C++, several LaTeX implementations, including OzTeX, DirectTeX, and Textures ( although Textures' AppleEvent support is currently very weak), and several other applications, such as MacPerl, BibTeX, Excalibur, and the ToolServer. - Native on the PowerMac. - Uses the latest Apple technologies, such as Drag and Drop, and AEGizmos. - Uses Ramon Felciano's Mercutio menu definition routine to support arbitrary key bindings in the menus. Alpha's home site is: http://www.cs.umd.edu/~keleher/alpha.html or ftp://www.cs.umd.edu/pub/faculty/keleher/Alpha/ Alpha is ShareWare, US $30. pete #### BINHEX anarcho-16.hqx **** Date: Wed, 12 Oct 1994 17:15:44 -0500 From: love@auriga.rose.brandeis.edu (Michael Love) Subject: anarcho16; a text editor --========================_12660485==_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Anarcho is a text editor, nothing more. This version (2.0) requires HyperCard v. 2.1 to run, and is shareware. The reference card for each bibliographic entry has separate fields for Author, Date, Title, Source, Volume, Pages, Keywords, and Notes, along with places to indicate whether you have a copy of the item and how it is filed. You can do "quick searches" for text in individual fields, or use HyperCard's card marking abilities to identify and work with only a subset of the entries in the stack. You can also create and save custom text import and export formats, so that you can import references from text files of varying formats, and can create custom bibliography lists to match the format required by your professor or publisher. The program can also store a list of abbreviations for journal names that is cross-referenced to the names on the reference cards, allowing you to use either full names or abbreviations when you create bibliography lists. You can create as many different bibliography stacks as you wish, and exchange bibliographic entries, import and export formats, and journal abbreviation lists among them. There is also an on-line help facility. Since I designed this stack for myself and my colleagues in science, and am not familiar with all the protocols for literature cataloging and referencing in other areas of study, it may not suit everyone's purpose, but I hope that it can be a useful tool for those who want to keep track of literature references and who need to create reference lists when they write papers. Bloom" Subject: Columnbo 2.1, A Tab-Delimited Import Utility As we've talked about some of our favorite free and share ware, I see one of my favorites (Columnbo, $15 Shareware by David Craig) isn't in the archive. Let me rectify that oversight with this submission of the unregistered 2.1 version that may be freely distributed. What is it? The following is from the documentation: >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Columnbo is an easy to use utility for formatting plain text files into columns of information, allowing them to be read by a spreadsheet program such as Excel. This simply involves inserting tabs at fixed positions within each line of text. But the real beauty of Columnbo is that you needn't worry about remembering column positions. Columnbo gives you the control to place column positions where you want, intuitively and easily. Simply click in the ruler to drag column markers where you wish. Many popular spreadsheet, database, and graphing programs allow you to import text files from various sources, but depend on information being formatted into tab separated columns. Columnbo was originally conceived to allow importing columns of accounting figures from a large computer into Excel. This computer generated fixed columns of text and figures separated by spaces. But sometimes your changes -- even though similar -- cannot be expressed as "find this, replace that." Sometimes what you replace depends on what you find. Sometimes you want to do other things than replace, other things than find. And sometimes you have to make the same changes to many documents. You can give DataMan instructions in any order. The instructions are familiar dialog-like objects that scroll in a window; they can be saved between sessions so that you never have to enter them again. And you can create menu items for these scripts of instructions, with keyboard shortcuts. Need to change all-uppercase to uppercase-and-lowercase often? Press command-0 for Smart Lowercase, one of several dozen pre-written scripts accompanying the application. One strength of DataMan is symbolization. You can describe text using symbols, just like you can use the symbol ^p for carriage return in other software. Only DataMan understands many, many more symbols -- both specific like ^p, and wild-cards like ^aPrice, which matches any price. You can redefine wild-cards and create new ones. With symbols you could, for example, find any date and replace it with the date found plus one day. Since so many options are available, DataMan provides you with a symbol-editing dialog. An example in which DataMan saved me hours: I Was working on a 40-page cross-index to a large catalog. Each page had some 80 page numbers listed on it, along with other numbers. The client decided to increase each page number by one. Changing 2400 page numbers by hand would have taken hours to enter and proof. DataMan did it in minutes -- and without mistakes. DataMan is fast, easy and powerful. This introduction doesn't begin to cover all DataMan's powers. Enjoy. Well, now you have it: DOCMaker, a winner of The 1992 & 1993 MacUser( Shareware Awards! DOCMaker is an application for the Macintosh* which creates stand-alone, self-running document files. It features TscrollableU and Tre-sizableU windows, graphics, varied text styles and fonts, and full printing capability. The stand-alone files are self-executing applications which you may distribute to others to read and print. No other application is required! This gives you the ability to distribute documents and information widely with no knowledge of the end-usersU Mac configuration or software. With DOCMaker you may create up to 60 separate, 32K chapters within each document. Every chapter may contain up to 60 graphics. You may name every chapter uniquely; it will appear in the Contents menu. You may add a table of contents and a find feature for the readers to quickly jump to selected sections. Each chapter may print separately. DOCMaker itself, will open any TEXT file or existing DOCMaker document. DOCMaker will also open and convert AppleUs TeachText files for saving as stand-alone documents. RHot PicturesS act like buttons within the documents for accomplishing such things as playing sounds, showing QuickTime* movies, and jumping to other applications. Files may be added to a document by using the Append File feature so that your existing documentation may be merged into a single stand-alone document. DOCMaker uses the Claris* XTND importing standard to import styled text from applications such as MicroSoft Word* and MacWrite*. DOCMaker also takes full advantage of text styles including fonts, faces (bold, italics, underline, shadow and outline) and specified colors for those so equipped. You may define text styles by name and use them when you need. And when youUre done, you may add a customized RAbout My ProductIS menu and dialog to the final stand-alone document. DOCMaker is a great way to distribute information on disks, networks and bulletin board services. This is my first distribution of Drop-MPSR. It is a small drag-n-drop app will change the setttings of 'MPSR' resources in text files. For those that don't know what I'm referring to, many text editors save information about the text document in an 'MPSR' resource. Font choice, size, and window positions are just some of the items stored in this resource. Drop-MPSR will change the 'MPSR' resource to one that you configure. It will also change the creator of the text file for you, too. For a group of text files dropped, Drop-MPSR will stagger the windows for you. Why would you want this utility? If you only work with your own text files then you probably won't need it. However, if you get text files from other people, and you don't like having to change the font selection for all of the files, then this utility should come in handy. For example, the source for NewsWatcher 2.0 is spread through 131 files. It would take quite a while to change the font choice in all of the files by hand! And if you use another editor (than CW's built in one) Drop-MPSR will change the creator for the files, too. Also, the windows will all be staggered automatically, too. This utility is freeware, and source code is included. Note that some of the code is copyrighted to other people (copyrights are included). As a first version this utility doesn't have much of an interface and configuring it is a one-time chore. The next version will have this and any bugs reported fixed. Have fun with it. EasyTyper(TM) is the first word and phrase glossary utility that doesn't require you to set up a word list or abbreviations. It automatically learns your words as you type them and recalls them after you type the first few characters and a user-defined hot key. Phrases can be retrieved by typing any word, or part of a word, and the hot key. Works in any application or dialog. For example once you have typed "International", you only have to type "Int" and the hot key to get the entire word. Phrases (complete with carriage returns) are recalled with their own hot key. When you type a few characters (or even one!) and the hot key to search the word list, the first match is typed out. If you want a different word, just hit the hot key again to find the next match. The list is organized so that the words recalled last are found first. Introductory Price: Only $39.00! The suggested retail price will be $69.95. Your feedback has been incorporated into this version. 2.2.1 (03/11/95) Some new things, bug fixes too ~~~~~ * 2.2 was an internal only release (and I had to change version numbers to synchronize things :) ** New features ** * Holding down option key while selecting 'Open' shows all file types in the dialog box. * More (and changed!) cursor movements: cmd-up - home, cmd-down - end, cmd-left - start of line, cmd-right - end of line, option-up - page up, option-down - page down, option-left - start of word, option-right - end of word. * Tabs to spaces, spaces to tabs. * Line ending type can be set in Save As dialog box. ** Bugs fixed ** * Watch cursor behavior fixed during search. * Autowrap menu item tracks window autowrap state. * Changed window now shows the 'gray' pencil and puts a bullet in the name. * Revert now reformats file. * Save As now only closes the old file if the new one is created successfully. --========================_19133458==_ Content-Type: application/mac-binhex40; name="Edit_II_2.2.1.sea" Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="Edit_II_2.2.1.sea" #### BINHEX edit7-10b2.hqx **** Date: Wed, 21 Sep 1994 15:30:53 -0500 From: (Harry Hahn) Subject: /text/edit7-10b2-docs-english.hqx --========================_13657850==_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" I'm submitting the following for Mark Nagata , who did all the work. As far as I remember, the result was something like "there isn't really." Well, attached application may be the answer for this problem. Attached is a stuffited binhexed file of Edit7, a freeware text editor written by Mr.H.Iimori. Edit7 is a text editor which can deal with: 1) an extremely big text file (upto about actual memory + 60MB subject to the availability of the hard disk space) 2) take advantage of script manager (no support for right to left writing language yet.) 3) can show line number 4) regular expression search and replace 5) wrap line 6) window split (can do many) 7) multiple view of a file 8) multiple windows 9) drag&drop editing of text bloc 10) multiple undo and more and more.... This editor is still under development, so some features are not yet implemented (e.g. print preference dialog has no effect.) Documentation is in Japanese, but I presume most of the features can be figured out by the user without much problems. I did not add any English explanation in compliance with the 4) bellow. As the subtitle suggests, EndNote Plus is a program with a dual purpose. First, EndNote Plus is a database manager-specialized in storing, managing, and searching for bibliographic references in your private reference library. Second, EndNote Plus is a bibliography maker-it builds lists of cited works automatically, and can format references to paste into footnotes as well. EndNote scans your word processor paper for in-text citations. It then compiles a bibliography using the information in your database. Finally, it will produce a copy of your paper, reformatting the in-text citations and placing the bibliography at the end. You select the style to use and EndNote does the rest! EndNote can reformat documents created by Microsoft Word 3, 4, and 5, WordPerfect 1.0 - 2.1, MacWrite 5.0, MacWrite II, WriteNow 1.0-3.0, Nisus 3 and FrameMaker 3. It can also reformat documents in RTF (Rich Text Format), and plain text documents. EndLink is the online database import facility for EndNote. It is an add-on module to EndNote which enables you to import journal references from online databases into your EndNote libraries. EndLink is not a program itself, rather it is a resource file which, when present in the same folder as the EndNote program, endows EndNote with a new import capability. To use EndLink, you log on to your database service, and capture the results of your search as they are listed to the screen. Then you start EndNote, Import the resulting text file using EndLink, and the references are imported directly into an EndNote library. Further instructions on begin on page 28. It fixes all known bugs. If you know about a bug that I haven't fixed, please let me know. Excalibur is a Macintosh spelling checker for LaTeX documents. You can optionally turn off LaTeX parsing, so Excalibur is a good plain text spelling checker too. Features include: - Excalibur will offer suggestions for how to correct a word. - Excalibur can spell check the clipboard. This makes it a good spelling checker for any text based application such as Alpha, BBEdit, or Eudora. - You can teach it about new LaTeX commands and environments that you define. - Optionally spell checks text in the typewriter (\tt) font. - You can create your own dictionaries. - Works with Textures and OzTeX documents. It should work on any TEXT file. - You will need System 6.0.5 or higher to run Excalibur. - If you are running System 7 or greater, there is balloon help. - Excalibur is free. - British, Dutch, French, German, and Italian dictionaries are also available. - It runs in native mode on a PowerPC. This is a fat binary. Version 2.1 changes: - Excalibur now has a new look! - There are better error message when Excalibur detects a syntax error. - There are better error messages when doing conversions. My purpose in writing this was to allow a prompt displaying a counter variable to continue working after 32,767 iterations. The Extended Counting macro updates a prompt each time the counter is incremented by 1. Displaying the updated prompt takes much longer than incrementing the variables needed to display the prompt. Therefore, if you choose to update the prompt every 100 increments, you will notice a marked increase in speed. In the macro code, I have commented out "If" statements to update the prompt every 10, 100, or 1,000 passes. #### BINHEX extra-macros-wordperfect.hqx **** Date: Tue, 09 Feb 1993 22:24:46 EST From: "Paul D. Revised Endnotes->Text Macro This macro will convert all endnotes to text and append them to the end of the document in the format of the currently defined endnote style. HyperBibTeX (version 0.9.7, 3-May-93) is a Macintosh HyperCard stack for managing bibliography databases compatible with BibTeX, the bibliography system used by the TeX typesetting language. HyperBibTeX's features include: * entering and editing bibliographic entries using BibTeX's entry types (Book, Article, Proceedings, etc.), * checking data integrity and consistency against a set of authority lists, * sorting cards on various fields, * searching the database, * marking cards individually or with the search function, * importing entries from a BibTeX file, * exporting cards to a BibTeX file. HyperBibTeX requires HyperCard version 2. It should run fine under system 6, but the Balloon Help facility requires system 7. It also runs under HyperCard Player. Version 0.9.7 is an upgrade that fixes bugs (including a serious bug in version 0.9.5) and adds some new features (such as an Index window that lists the Keys of the cards). If you are presently using an older version of HyperBibTeX, I strongly recommend that you upgrade to version 0.9.7. Evan Antworth Academic Computing Department Summer Institute of Linguistics 7500 W. What it does is simple, it reads in a file of names, and allows you to associate page numbers with each of these names. However, it makes the process easier than doing it by hand (My own experience with a ~1500 name index had the time go from 9 hrs to 2 hrs.). It offers find features that will allow you to find names (or portions of names), or find those who are indexed to a certain page. You can open up previously made indexes and continue with your work at any time. The Indexer also offers Alphabetical sorting functions, and functions to create useable index files. (As an example, I received a DOS file from the District in All caps, with extraneous information all over the place... The Indexer allows you to selectively remove that extraneous information and create a useable file). If you are involved in anything that involves association of text with page numbers, The Indexer could be useful to you. The Indexer is Shareware $5US. The inspiration came to me after reviewing the stack of a similar nature by Peter Jorgenson. InfoBrowser can read in text versions of Info-Mac Digest files. After reading them in it displays them in a fairly easy to use format that allows rapid browsing, and the extracting of information including files to be downloaded. I have fixed a couple of bugs from 2.8 and added some minor functionality to the Download Card. I have made it easier to extract file info into a format that is appropriate for e-mail retrieval of archived files. For those who may not know, InfoMac Digest stack is a hypercard front-end for the InfoMac Digests. Then when you print a document, you get extra controls that let you automatically print your letterhead, in addition to whatever the program normally prints. A great utility if you fax a lot of stuff and don't want to waste your 2-4 color letterhead, or if you're tired of doing the Scrapbook shuffle to paste your letterhead into your word processor. It's also great for putting an automatic 'fax postit note' on the page or putting the word DRAFT under the text of your word processor. Version 1.5 adds the ability to add "on the fly" text to your letterhead. How do I use it? Drag a text file onto the Line Counter icon and Line Counter will count it's lines. You can even drop multiple files all at one time and Line Counter will sum the lines of all the files dropped. Line Counter has one window which displays three things: the name of the current file being processed, the total number of lines counted so far, the total number of files processed so far. The last two are numeric fields which allow editing. This allows you to reset the total counts to zero, if you like, or even just copy the numbers out for pasting elsewhere. What does it cost? Line Counter is free. #### BINHEX link-documents-wp.hqx **** Date: Mon, 21 Aug 1995 01:13:09 -0500 (CDT) From: "William M. Curiously, I revisited LPunch decoder only a few weeks ago, I gave a copy to Lloyd Wood (did he ever contact you? I suggested he should, for e-mail gen) and he said it was a bit flaky with certain cdevs and INITs. He didn't say which ones, but I recompiled it with the latest version, tarted up the icons with a bit of colour and sent him a copy of the resulting 1.1.2. Otherwise it's unchanged. Now that I no longer have free access to e-mail (and insufficient need to pay for access) I can't get hold of any test files from EARN or anywhere else. So I have neither incentive to make further improvements, nor material to test them on. I did suggest to Lloyd that he do some tests, but I haven't heard anything from him; I assume that if he was still having problems he would have let me know. The algorithms as they stand were pretty exhaustively tested before 1.1.1 was released. The application does pretty well everything I wanted of it, and nobody came up with any suggestions for improvements when it was new; so I assume that either everyone is happy with it or few people are using it. I don't want to fall victim to creeping featurism! I have uploaded 1.1.2 to HQ F32, and sent DNC a message suggesting that he delete the earlier version. Feel free to forward 1.1.2 on to the Info-Mac archives, or anywhere else you and Louis Bergeron think fit. There should still be a copy of 1.1.1 on the Dublin archive, BTW. Chinese Word or MacWrite documents can be imported into PageMaker and QuarkExpress. It will work under System 6.0.7 or 7 and best of all, you do not need to have Apple's ChineseTalk System or WorldScript installed! Printing is very slow on postscript laserprinters, but only slightly longer on QuickDraw printers such as the Imagewriter, LaserWriter LS and Sytlewriter. Faxing documents is also quite fast. The method of character selection is similar to ChineseTalk via pinyin. The only difference between this demo and the full version is only the characters up to the pinyin "feng" are here. The DA will not work properly unless both the fonts and extension are installed and the System restarted. The demo guide is in Word Format. You can open it with MacWrite, Microsoft Word or any other word processor that can handle that format by first opening the application and selecting Open from the file menu. Choose the Guide when the get file dialog appears. Instructions on ordering the full version are included in the demo guide. Mishu was given a four and a half mice rating by MacUser magazine in 1989. Version 2.04 is fully compatible with System 7.1. It will not work on non-US versions or on versions previous to 4.0D. The patch was created with ResCompare 2.5 from the "MSWD 4.0D->4.0E resources" collection by Art Eschenlauer , but, unlike the latter, it doesn't require ResEdit, and, being smaller, it takes considerably less time to download. The only difference between versions 4.0D and 4.0E of MS Word lies in how they behave on 68040 Macintoshes. The 68040 processor has a processor cache (not to be confused with the disk cache) which, when enabled, speeds things up considerably; however, some older applications, like Word 4.0D, cannot run when this cache is enabled. Word version 4.0E runs when the processor cache is enabled, so it can be used effectively on 68040 Macs, such as the LC (Performa) 475. #### TEXT msword-50-info.txt **** Date: Mon, 18 Nov 91 18:52:04 EST From: "Dieder B." It will attempt to determine for each file if it should be opened with MS Word 5.x or with MS Word 6.x. It will also launch the appropriate version of Word and tell it to open each file in sequence. Changes from v. 1.0: - Fixed two little, but nasty bugs, that prevented it from working in some computers, although it would run just fine in others. - Added some interface niceties. System requirements: You must have AppleScript 1.1 installed, as well as the AppleScript extensions Display Dialog, File Commands, Choose File, and Read/Write Commands. Than navigate through the text using the keyboard or the mouse! You can change the key string and indicizing again in a flash! And more... Open how many files you like, Orniwell doesn't use its RAM partition, it uses only the needed RAM from the total RAM memory! It's faster than you can think also in the 68k version. Native (and faster) PPC version is available too! #### BINHEX oztex-18-68000.hqx **** Date: Thu, 9 Feb 1995 20:02:19 +1030 From: atrevorr@maths.adelaide.edu.au (Andrew Trevorrow) Subject: OzTeX 1.8; an implementation of the TeX typesetting system I've just put all the distribution files for OzTeX 1.8 in Incoming/oztex/. This is an enhanced version of SpectreWrite Pro v2.1. I have received numerous complaints from users of HyperCard 2.0 and 2.2 that they couldn't get SpectreWrite to work properly. As such, this stack is a standalone and should work on all computers that can run Hypercard 2.1 (anything higher than a Mac Plus). The requirements to use this stack are 1.1 megs of disk space and a minimum of 1.3 megs of RAM. It runs best with 2 megs of RAM. I hope you like this. Spectral Design is currently working on a very much improved word processor that will be faster by using our SpecChek XCFNs and will have a slicker interface. Enjoy! Please excuse the About and Help files in PhantomWrite. I have not yet changed them so they still refer to the program as SpectreWrite Pro v2.1 which it is essentially. Since the next version will indeed be PhantomWrite and will be an improved version I decided I might as well just make this version PhantomWrite v1.0. In this archive is the latest version of the most powerful HyperCard word processor around. It is also the only shareware word processor that offers a real working spell checking system with a 46,000 word dictionary. Here are the main features you will find in this version of PhantomWrite v1.0: -A ruler to help align text -open and save text and rtf files.....even files bigger than 42k. It will also open non-text files and show what is in the file. -The new feature here is that you can make your Mac more like a typewriter. This is good if you miss the clickety clack of old fashioned typewriters. -Spell checking with a 46,000 word dictionary and a custom dictionary. -Align text to the left, center or right -AutoSave feature to ensure that your work doesn't get lost. -Encryption and Decryption for private files. -and some other goodies. There is no limit to the length or number lines that a file can have. PlainText incorporates a useful set of conversion features for converting between DOS, Unix, and Mac text file conventions, stripping linefeeds and control characters, searching for and stripping lines containing certain patterns, changing straight to curly quotes and back, and more. It implements all the standard features of a text editor, including search and replace, regular expression searching, hard and soft word-wrap, with full interconvertability between the two. Lines can be numered, prefixed, suffixed, or sorted. Bookmarks can be placed in your text documents. PlainText now incorporates a very intuitive method for column editing and it supports Drag and Drop and Clippings. It even implements a number of operating system functions through a command-line interface and it includes support for MPW ToolServer. PlainText is distributed as a fat binary. For those who still desire PlainText's orginal small disk image, PlainText now also includes a general- purpose mechanism for splitting any fat binary application into PowerPC native and 68K native versions. Version 1.6 incorporates numerous small enhancements and fixes. It's principal user-interface enhancement is placing the Find and Replace dialog in a growable and scrollable window. Kleper) Subject: PowerSpaceTabsPlus-101.hqx PowerSpaceTabsPlus (PSTP) is a simple program that removes "white space" from text files and replaces it with a tab. "White space" is defined by PSTP as two or more consecutive spaces. Why would you want to do this? There are several applications. If you have information stored in a text file separated by spaces, and you want to import it into a database, like FileMaker Pro, you can use PSTP to automatically set the tabs so you don't have to type the whole thing into the database. It also comes with a small tool for converting FirstClass upload and message logs into a FileMaker Pro database. Version 1.0.1 fixes a small bug in previous versions that makes it appear as though the entire file is not parsed. In reality, the whole file is parsed, but the length of the file remains the same so part of the old file is still present. This version fixes that bug completely. Support can be found at http://htcs1.rit.edu/pstp.html or by sending email to sjked@rit.edu $5 shareware. I give permission for this program to be included on the CD-ROM version of info-mac. Scott J. Our collaborative writing environment, the PREP Editor, handles transcription *extremely* well - to the point of being able to include the actual voice in the document (if you have a enough RAM)! We use PREP to transcribe our own studies, in addition to writing all our papers. This transciption capability is ancillary to PREP's real goal, which is to provide a writing environment to support collaborative writing. We are an NSF sponsored project. PREP includes XTND capabilities for import and export; text, drawing, and sound support; and much more. This is a very much improved version of Spectral Design's word processor SpectreWrite. A number of new features have been added that make this much more like a word processor and allows you to do more things with SpectreWrite. The big addition to this version (which is why it is so much bigger than the previous version) is that SpectreWrite has become one of the first publicly available shareware word processors that sports full featured spell checking with a 46,000 word dictionary in addition to a custom user dictionary. Another new addition is a ruler at the top of the document. This should help a little in formatting. As always, SpectreWrite allows you to open and save either text files or RTF (Rich Text Format) files so you can retain formatting and styles and sizes. SpectreWrite has an advanced Find Word feature which allows you to find and replace words in your document. You can now change the alignment of your text based on your needs. SpectreWrite also has a built in, easy to use Encryption and Decryption system. This will make sure that your private documents stay private. Also, you can now choose the AutoSave feature so you will be automatically prompted to save your file which will help prevent lost data. And now SpectreWrite supports files larger than 32k. For detailed info on how to use SpectreWrite just push the help button. This latest version has fixed up all of the previous bugs and inconsitencies and added many new features. This version is called Pro because it is much better and more useful than the previous versions of SpectreWrite. Hope you enjoy this! The diff file can be used to update an older version of the source file stored on another computer (normally, a Unix machine). By transferring the much shorter diff file instead of the entire source file, significant upload time can be saved. This is especially useful for people who connect to Unix hosts using slow dial-up modems. Although the primary focus of TCXdiff is for programmers who need to synchronize their program files between their personal computer and a Unix host, it can be used to update any other text file as well. TCXdiff is based on the freeware program Xdiff written in August 1989 at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). You can obtain Xdiff via anonymous ftp from ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu. The Xdiff package is needed in addition to TCXdiff since TCXdiff DOES NOT perform the updating per se, but relies on xfix (part of the Xdiff package) to perform that task. Xfix was written primarily for Unix hosts, I have not tried to compile it on other platforms. TCXdiff is functionally equivalent to Xdiff. It is useful for parsing digest email. For example, from inside elm (the Unix mail program) simply pipe a message thru "undigest". "Undigest" will break all the messages inside the digest into individual messages and display them. It does not alter the original message, it makes a copy. I did not write this, I just use it. Requirements: 50k free RAM; System 7.0 or later; Cost: All you do is send me email saying where you found UsenEdit, what you think of it, and what you would like to see in future versions! Modifications and fixes since v1.1.2: * Miscellaneous code improvements; * Text caret no longer disappears below the bottom of the window; * User can now specify the maximum number of windows; * Files larger than 32k are opened into Untitled windows so you don't accidentally overwrite the original. * No longer saves a blank document on top of the original if you "Cut" the entire text out of the document. * "Save" is now available after "Cut", "Clear", etc. Enjoy, and have fun posting! ttyl, erik --========================_12779302==_ Content-Type: application/mac-binhex40; name="UsenEdit_Folder.sit" Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="UsenEdit_Folder.sit" #### BINHEX vim-30.hqx **** Date: Thu, 20 Oct 1994 14:23:18 -0500 From: "Eric Fischer" Subject: Vim 3.0; a Mac version of the UNIX vi editor --========================_12661029==_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Vim is an almost compatible version of the UNIX editor vi.
