The installed facilities provide a fast, simple and secure way of launching multiple, simultaneous communication sessions. * is based upon Apple's Communications Toolbox technology, consequently connectivity is only limited by the range of Connection and Terminal Emulation tools that are available on your machine. (N.B. The package comes bundled with several tools including a public domain tcp/ip/telnet tool and Apple's VT102 terminal emulation tool). * includes 'communications' extensions to HyperCard's scripting language (HyperTalk) to provide an extremely powerful communications scripting facility. The package is designed around the concept of a 'service', which is defined as any process running on a local or remote computer, eg. an Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) or a Campus Wide Information System (CWIS). A service is uniquely defined via a series of 16 parameters that describe attributes such as the name, service type, the method used to connect to the service, the terminal emulation, if any, to be used, the login and logout scripts, etc. The hub of the package is the AYS Installer stack that is responsible for maintaining service definitions by providing facilities for creation, storage and testing. As the name implies the stack is also responsible for installing/removing definitions into/from other stacks, therefore enabling the creation of custom built communication stacks or the addition of communications facilities to existing stacks. The latest release of HyperCard (2.2) now allows such stacks to be made into stand-alone applications. An installed service definition may be used to either initiate a connection or listen for an incoming connection (depending on the capabilities of the configured connection tool). This later 'listening' mode of operation permits the creation of simple HyperCard 'server' facilities. Service definitions may also be created that do not display an associated window, (terminal emulation) thus allowing for the creation of communications graphical-user-interface front-ends. Service definitions also allow for multiple, simultaneous sessions to be active at any one time. A typical session might therefore include a serial connection to your local OPAC in one window, whilst another window displays information from a CWIS, and a third displays a remote network connection to a second OPAC. Three example stacks are included that are intended both as examples of what can be achieved as well as useful, ready-to-use utilities. --========================_15107456==_ Content-Type: application/mac-binhex40; name="At-Your-Service.2.1.cpt" Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="At-Your-Service.2.1.cpt" #### BINHEX back-file-copy-11-xcmd.hqx **** From: Maveric9@aol.com Date: Wed, 23 Nov 1994 15:29:48 -0500 Subject: BackFileCopy 1.1 #### BINHEX balloon-101.hqx **** Date: 21 Jul 92 12:55 +0100 From: Robert Geisler Subject: Balloon XCMD V1.0.1 The Balloon XCMD allows you to add System 7 Help balloons to your HyperCard buttons and fields. To install it, use a program like ResEdit to copy the BreakName XFCN resource from this stack and paste it into any HyperCard stack you wish to access it from. If you wish to use this XFCN in a number of stacks, just install it in your Home stack. Many Macintosh users never see a 'raw' file name, but if you delve into file manipulation in HyperCard you will become painfully familiar with them. To see the hidden part of a file name, select a file in Finder and choose "Get Info" from the File menu. The hidden part of the name appears on the line labelled 'where'. It is usually a rather long chunk of text that contains the name of every folder you have to open to get to the desired file. The only parameter BreakName requires is a text string, presumably the name of a file from which you want to extract the path or actual file name. The result of its calculations is a text string containing just the file's actual name. Optionally you can specify just the part you require ("Volume", "Path", "Folder", or "File"), and the path separators in case you are using some future version of the Mac O/S that uses different path separators (or perhaps A/UX). A special case is made to properly deal with the string returned by HyperCard's "long name of this stack" function, which is of the form . This special case may not work with non-English versions of HyperCard. Syntax: BreakName(FileName,,) The BreakName XFCN is copyright Ben Lawson 1993. At the heart of the stack is the colorizeHC XCMD, which supports colour backdrops in Hypercard - supporting a surprising variety of colour effects in standard Hypercard. However, a stack provides other features. With some simple amendments to your stack, it will send extra messages to indicate when colour or windows should be added. It will maintain a list of windows over a card, and move them if the window moves and close them when the card closes. For read-only stacks it maintains a number of global variables, saved and restored for each stack - supporting stacks that change the appearance of particular cards when they are on the screen, but do not wish to save the data when Hypercard terminates. The same mechanism can be used generally to skip some of the initialisation process of a stack when subsequently resuming it. This version still contains v1.0 of the XCMD, but has many extensions of the support scripts and fixes a few bugs. The XCMD stack itself can be more easily distributed as a run time system, without its support stacks. The software is free, the only restriction being to preserve the copyright notices. --========================_6956254==_ Content-Type: application/mac-binhex40; name="cHC_XCMD_v1.15" #### BINHEX comm-connect-11a.hqx **** Date: Mon, 19 Sep 1994 13:13:17 -0400 From: Alex Metcalf Subject: CommConnect v1.1a; communications for HyperCard --========================_15300140==_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" CommConnect v1.1a Best Before Yesterday software release ----------------- by Alex Metcalf Best Before Yesterday proudly announces version 1.1a of CommConnect, a powerful communications external for HyperCard. CommConnect uses Apple's Communications Toolbox software to provide simple yet powerful comms capabilities. CommConnect returns errors in comprehendable sentences, and the stack contains full documentation on use. This XFCN works in HyperCard and SuperCard. DragNDrop is intended to be used within a single window. All that the programmer needs to provide to the DragAndDrop routine is an array of objects that the current object can be dropped into. DragAndDrop will take care of tracking the object, hiliting the rectangles as they are passed over, and returning the object id that the object was dropped onto. >From a scriptors end, the command looks like this: put DragAndDrop( fromObjectID, toObjectID1, ... , toObjectIDN ) into objectIDDroppedOn - fromObjectID is the object that the user is dragging from. - toObjectIDx are the objects that the user is dragging to. There may be a maximum of 15 objects to drag to. - objectIDDroppedOn is the item descriptor that the user dropped on, or empty if the user did not drop on any object. - objectID's are in the form of "cd btn id 101" or "bg fld id 102". Do not use names of objects, or numbers of objects. I've not tested it with HC 2.0 or later, but I know it works fine with 1.2.2 and 1.2.5, and I see no reason it shouldn't work with 2.0 and 2.1. ----- #### BINHEX import-export-tools-22.hqx **** Date: Thu, 18 Jun 92 11:24:42 -0400 From: Robert Murray Subject: Import-Export Tools 2.2 This is the latest version of my tools, which are used to import and export text in and out of stacks. Help balloons can be added to buttons, fields, areas of a card, and more. Simple commands make using Inflate easy: just one line in a button's script lets you add a help balloon. Any (unlikely) errors are returned in easily understood sentences. Advanced users have complete control over the help balloon, such as position of display, and balloon tip offset. In addition, a number of different balloon contents can be used: PICT resources, TEXT resources, and string resources. Version 1.2 is a complete re-write of the Inflate code, yielding improved performance and efficient code. Advanced users can now use short commands for Inflate (such as "STR " for "Single string resource"). Also, the error handling has been vastly improved to make error checking much easier. Finally, a few small bugs have been fixed. Inflate is shareware; for more information on paying the small shareware fee, please see the stack. Commercial users should contact me for more information. Since Cambridge no longer produces CD-ROM Medline, the stacks are not directly usable as teaching tools; however, they contain scripting techniques that are of general applicability for CAI. Especially unusual about these stacks is that they use Hypercard on a Mac to teach use of an IBM computer (pre-Windows). Because of this, the stacks are controlled almost exclusively from the keyboard, instead of using the mouse. Other techniques that may be useful include: -A time-out script that returns the system to the introductory screen after a set time of inactivity. -Technique to superimpose a relatively small field of text on the screen gradually in an aesthetically pleasing way. -Graphic design and simple animation techniques to simulate screens and screen transitions in a command-line DOS environment. To use stacks, put them all in a folder, and open HardinStart I would suggest putting in Hypercard directory. --Eric Rumsey, Hardin Library for Health Sciences, Univ of Iowa, Iowa City IA 52242 < eric-rumsey@uiowa.edu > --0-91781693-746828801:#32001 Content-Type: APPLICATION/octet-stream; name="ccMedTut.sea.hqx" Content-ID: Content-Description: #### BINHEX mega-script-store-xfcn.hqx **** Date: Sat, 1 Apr 1995 11:21:28 +0100 From: flco@macline.co.uk (Hugh Senior) Subject: MegaScripting (HC); HyperCard XFCN A simple XFCN to access data (executable or just data strings) in the resource fork. It can also install protection into your Home stack to detect and remove the MerryXmas virus automatically. Most (if not all) virus protection programs cannot detect this virus. What is the MerryXmas Virus? ---------------------------- The MerryXmas virus infects stack scripts, starting with the Home stack, and any other stacks that you open thereafter. The virus infects HyperCard (and possibly SuperCard) stacks *only*. It does not infect any other files on your hard disk. How to Use Delete MerryXmas --------------------------- Delete MerryXmas 1.0.2 requires HyperCard version 2.1 or later, and at least as much free disk space as the size of the largest stack to be checked. 1. Double-click the Delete MerryXmas stack to open it. The stack immediately disinfects your Home stack, to avoid errors from an existing MerryXmas virus infection. 2. Click the Add... button. To add whole folders or hard disk volumes, hold down the Option key as you click the Add... button. Repeat step 2 to add stacks from more than one location. 3. Select the stacks you want to optimize. 4. Click Start. A grey bar shows the stack's progress through the list of stacks. When all stacks have been checked, a report appears. 5. Click Save. A dialog box appears for you to name the report. Click the Save button (or press the Return key). 6. Click Done. To stop the optimization at any time, click the Stop button. After confirming your action, Delete MerryXmas will stop checking stacks in the list, leaving the remaining stacks untouched. (At certain times, the Stop button is dimmed and the current process cannot be canceled.) Scripter's Note --------------- If you enjoy scripting in HyperCard as much as I do, you're probably quite likely to end up wanting to take it apart. A word of warning: Delete MerryXmas has been designed to work best in its original, *locked* state, so please tinker with an unlocked *copy* only. Also, unlocking Delete MerryXmas may result in its being infected, so please keep it locked. It was originally included on an AppleScript beta CD; it is being posted and submitted to the net archives with the author's permission. The XFCN accepts an AppleScript in text form as an argument, and executes the script if it is valid. It is probably easiest to write, test, and debug AppleScripts using the Script Editor. See the stack script and "Execute" button scripts for error checks and calling syntax. The AppleScript example uses Finder 7.1.3 for simplicity, but you can use any valid AS commands or scripts that invoke other AppleScriptable software. Requires AppleScript and HyperCard 2.1. AppleScript is included with a tutorial book from BMUG called "The Tao of AppleScript", ISBN 1-56830-075-1. I've heard that there is another Applescript book by Danny Goodman that also includes the AppleScript software; that book may be of interest to people who like Goodman's HyperCard books, and those who intend to use AS with HC. -- Bill Johnston (johnston@me.udel.edu) -- 38 Chambers Street; Newark, DE 19711; (302)368-1949 #### BINHEX scientific-notation-101.hqx **** From: M.Winter@sheffield.ac.uk (Mark Winter) Subject: [*] SciNotation XFCN for HyperCard and SuperCard bug fix Date: Mon, 2 May 1994 10:10:18 +0100 --========================_8778700==_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" SciNotation XFCN v1.0.1 The SciNotation XFCN allows HyperCard and SuperCard to work with scientific number notation (e.g. -1.23E4). (Comment characters inside quotation marks are not removed.) Global Checking Often during the development cycle of a stack, some global variables remain within handlers, even though they are not used any longer. These unused globals can be removed. The non-developer's version has a User Preferences card in its Home stack with no apparent way of selecting user levels above 1 (browsing) or 2 (typing). If you know the magic command, you can type it into the message box when you are at the User Preferences card (and nowhere else) to reveal buttons which allow selection of user levels up to 5 (scripting) which is necessary to edit scripts freely. Not everyone knows the magic command, or can always remember it, or where to execute it. The purpose of ScriptingLevel v1.0 is to execute the command for HyperCard users who do not own the developer's version. I hope it will also help reduce the number of times the above questions are asked. Please download this stack and leave copies of it where users of the non-developer's version can get to it. Here is _another_ update to my Sound Utilities externals for HyperCard--please replace the previous archive with this one. One important thing I did was fix a bug in the SPBRecordToHandleSync XCMD, which could cause crashes under certain situations. This revealed itself on 500-series PowerBooks, but it could have happened elsewhere as well. Also, there are some new functions for controlling recording: you can now programmatically select your input source and gain level, if your hardware supports it. Robertson, if you`re out there somewhere, I hope you`re considering a HyperCard 2.x (3.x?) version of this stack. CAUTION: this stack was meant for version 1.2.x and has some difficulties with version 2.x. A couple of the externals aren`t greatly happy with my configuration, either (System 7.1/HC2.1). The stack and the scripts therein may be easily converted to other purposes. There are several good scripts that may be of interest to other scriptwriters, namely customized searches of multiple stacks with multiple search criteria, automatic updating of information present of several different cards, and some decent sound cut and paste management. This is shareware/mailware. Individual users please send me a postcard or e-mail telling me what use you made of the stack. Coporate or University labs should contact me for a (cheap) site liscense.
