Boy are my fingers sore. I'll work on the herb source list later. 8-)
I hope this will get you started on a list of garden seed suppliers.
This is the time of year to start planning that big garden. Yep big
garden is conducive to sore muscles and backs - lower fresh vegetable
bills - higher water bill - the great satisfaction that you did it
yourself. TNT

There is a company here locally that sells all sorts of nitro-packed
stuff including #10 cans of assorted seeds. The name of the company is
Nitro-Pak Preparedness Center. They have a local showroom and also do
mail order. One #10 can, if I remember correctly, is $25. Their phone
is (310)802-2635.

Just got my new Nitro-Pak catalog. On the second page they
advertise #10 cans of seeds (nitrogen packed of course) for $24.95
which is item # 5600. They show to be on a winter special with a
normal price of $49.95. The cans I have hold 25 foil packets of
seeds. The sixteen varieties include such goodies as: sweet corn,
squash, beans, peas, onion, peppers, cantaloupe, watermelon,
pumpkin, spinach, cabbage, turnips, cucumber, lettuce, tomato,
     carrots, and beets.

Ready Reserve also has the cans of seeds but I currently don't have

they have the same list of seeds.

Here is a listing of Heirloom seed sources.
These sources store seeds from many plants that are not
commercially produced, but still have great variety and nutritional
content.

It is said that over 90% of the world's population depend on only three
grains for sustinance, while there are over 4000+ different types of
native plants that would provide the same (or better) nutrition.

Subj : Seed Conservation - Heirloom Seed Catalog List

For anyone interested in how crossbreeding and biotechnology
are affecting our food crops, there's a very good article in October 1993
_Vegetarian Times_ (P.O. Box 570, Oak Park, IL 60303, 1-800-435-9610)
The article discusses how many, many varieties of plants are going extinct
and how that leaves us vulnerable to disasters like the Irish
Potato Famine and 1971's Southern Corn Leaf Blight. Also talks about
conservation efforts, including government-run "seed banks" (which apparently
are pretty useless - not surprising, considering who's running them).
A lot of the conservation efforts are going on at the backyard level, with
several small seed companies and non-profit organizations involved. A list
is below, incorporating info from the article and from rec.garden's herb.faq.

The below companies sell heirloom and/or open-pollinated seeds
(according to this article, "...the seed of open-pollinated plants can be
saved for subsequent plantings, unlike hybrid seeds, which do not breed
true-to-form and therefore must be bought anew next year...Large seed
companies prefer hybrids because they can sell more seed...)

The type of corn that is best suited for this purpose woulds be a type
called a FLOUR CORN. Kernals of flour corn are easier to grind than flint
or dent corn, milling easily to a soft flour. It's grown primarily in the
Southwest and the Northern Plains.

It's available with kernals that are either blue/purple, multi-colored,
red/pink, white, yellow, and black. I'll give you the names of the yellow
varieties plus some sources.

Subject: Re: Catalog addresses (was Re: Burpee address)

I got some of this from the net a while back, so it's worth publishing
again. I haven't heard of 'Pepper Gal', but I recommend a magazine called
'Chile Pepper'. Good info and good receipes.

Article 5008 (73 more) in rec.gardens:
From: Kay Klier
Subject: Great strange plants...
Date: 27 Jan 92 23:59:42 GMT

Just started to mark up my copy of the Nichol's Garden Nursery catalog
(herbs and rare seed specialists) 1190 North Pacific Highway, Albany,
OR, 97321. Haven't seen this catalog for years, and I guess I forgot
all the lovely strange things they carry:

For instance:
Nepeta mussini, a low-growing rock garden catnip that my cats seem to
think is the cat-equivalent of Acapulco gold.
Coriander or Cilantro: a slow-bolting form
Epazote: Chenopodium ambrosoides
Good King Henry: Chenopodium bonus-henricus
Anise hyssop: Agastache foeniculus. Licorice-scented leaves, nice
blue flowers the bees love (no, you don't get licorice flavored honey).
Tagetes lucida: a 3' marigold that makes a pretty good substitute for
tarragon.
Sweet Woodruff: for Mai-wine and potpourri
Pyrethrum: grow your own.

Some things I think I recall people asking about/talking about recently:
Fraxinella (gas plant)
Hops (for flavoring beer and ale) (yes, they are the other genus in
the Cannabinaceae (or Cannabaceae, take your pick) -- anyhow,
   first cousin to marijuana
Saffron crocus bulbs
Walking onions
Elephant garlic
yellow potatos (bintje is great in potato salad!)
yard long beans (no, green, not purple)
celtuce
miniature sweet corn (advise picking no more than 5 days after silks appear)
jicama
tomatillo
11 cvs hot pepper
12 cvs sweet pepper (incl. pepperoncini)

Oddities that caught my eye:
black radish (black skin, white flesh)
Oregon Spring and Santiam tomatoes, two determinant types that are
parthenocarpic. In poor growing conditions, fruits will be seedless.
About 10 days *earlier* than Early Girl.
Lion's ears (Leonotus nepetifolia): a 3-5 ft mint plant with whorls of
orange flowers. The hummingbirds like this South African native.
Lobelia 'Compliment Scarlet': a tetraploid cross between L. fulgens
and L. cardinalis. Should be large (1-1.5") bright red flowers
that hummingbirds ought to find irresistible.
Chinese lantern plant (Physalis alkakengi): "husk tomatoes" with
bright orange husks. Made about $100 one year selling that to
florists on $1 worth of seed...
Bushel gourd: a lageneria with fruits to 20" across.

also LOTS of oriental veggies....

mainly herbs and veggies, esp. oriental veggies Seeds seem to run about
$0.70-$1.50 packet, mostly around $1. Free catalog, I think. $1.25 handling
charge per order.

lots of "mainstream veggies" and a fair amount of wildflower and ornamental
seeds. Interesting plants for drying. Prices about 1/2-3/4 of "rack" prices
for packeted seeds (Burpee, NK, etc.) around here.
Also will sell largish quantities of seed to ordinary people at wholesale
prices (usually 25-50% off). (e.g., 4 oz beets $2.45, but 1 lb for $5.35)
$1 handling per order east of Rockies. Add $0.20 per pound rest of Rockies.

'Nother neat catalog:

Liberty Seed Company, PO Box 806, New Philadephia, OH 44663.

Lots of good, basic seeds, including 34 cultivars of sweet corn,
and some FUN seeds like:

Ornamental wheat for weaving and bouquets:
  black heads and black awns
  white heads and black awns
  white heads and white awns
and 'Gigas': 3 1/2" heads with 1" long spikelets (HUGE!!) and grey or black
awns.

Podcorn: like a regular ear of field corn, but with "husks" surrounding
each kernal.

Broomcorn: not a corn, but a sorghum with long infloresence branches. It's
the stuff real "cornbrooms" are made from. Since the tips of the
inflorescences are covered with shiny yellow, red, brown, mahogany or
black "seeds", they've apparently been considered decorative by the
  florists.

Plant a handful of epazote plants, and you'll never have to buy seed again.
They happily reseed all over, and grow like--um, weeds. Which, if you didn't
know what they were, is what you'd think of them.

Mine are currently a gorgeous maroon color, tinged with scarlet, by the way.
Their last gasp of the season.

Date: 22 May 92 04:02:42 GMT

Hi Netters!

A couple of weeks ago I posted a request for information on a source
of seeds for the Chinese Tallow Tree. As promised, here is a summary
of (all 3) responses.

[text deleted]

Scientific name is Sapium sebiferum, of the Euphorbiaceae. Don't know
where to find it, but Hortus III indicates that it is naturalized in
the southern US. Also sold as "vegetable tallow tree"

I have never seen the seeds for sale, but I have seen the tree
(I believe), all over Hawaii.

According to _CORNUCOPIA: A Source Book of Edible Plants_ by Stephen
Facciola (ISBN 0-9628087-0-9), seeds for the chinese tallow tree
(Sapium sebiferum) are available from the following mail-order
sources (sorry, none in GA).

J.L. Hudson, Seedsman
P.O. Box 1058
Redwood City, CA 94064

SASE not required... Hudson's catalog is too big for a standard
envelope. Add an extra dollar for a one-year subscription to his rare
seeds supplement... comes out 2-3 times a year, and lists seeds that
have recently arrived and may not be available in large enough
quantities to be listed in the main catalog.

His catalog is _great_ reading... it always leaves me with a very bad
case of acreage-lust (I want enough garden space to grow two of
_everything_). Nice folks, too... I usually enclose a letter with my
order letting them know how my previous year's plants turned out, and
I've always gotten a note back in response (usually from Hudson
himself). The Zapotec Collection contains some very interesting
varieties... I really love the Manzano Amarillo chile (fuzzy leaves,
apple-shaped green fruits turning yellow/orange when ripe, flavorful,
and VERY HOT).

Seeds Blum
Idaho City Stage
Boise, Idaho

These folks get #very# badly backlogged in the spring. I usually get
their catalog right around Christmas time, and I've learned to send in
the order immediately... one year I waited until the end of February to
order, and my seeds took over eight weeks to arrive.

They're a good source of heirloom and traditional vegetable varieties...
no F1 hybrids at all.

TP> This will seriously be one of the best questions asked, and should be
 TP> filed somewhere, or compiled into a book-like freq'able packet. Did I
TP> just talk myself into a job?

After we discussed this, I was thinking of where I might find
some more information about hybrids. Well I was over at the shop,
which connects to my mothers apartment, and I went over there
to use the reading room. Low and behold (literally) laying on the
floor was a neat little catalog with a wealth of info about the
types of seeds that we require for storage, and for that matter
have many advantages over hybrid seeds, seeds which are open-
pollinated.

They sell many types of OP seeds including Heirloom, those
prior to 1940, Family Hybrids, seeds that have been handed down
for centuries from generation to generation, new varieties, rare,
and some hybrids. They have herbs, flowers, grains, and vegetables,
as well as information and sales of storage techniques for short,
medium, and long term storage.

It said that you could grow seeds from hybrid planets, but you
would not know what you might get. Then if you endeavored to breed
theses strains into something stable, it takes from 6 to 10
years. So it could take forever (literally if you life depends on
it) to breed the right plant for your area.

Where as the hybrids are breed for commercial use for things
like maximum output at optimum conditions, uniform size and
color, sometimes with no thought about taste, and maturation
time just to name a few. Where open-pollinated varieties have
been breed for the areas that they are grow in, and have
advantages like the fact that they still produce a good yield even
when things have not been optimal, as well as that a gardener
might not want his crop to come on at the same time, plus we
all know they taste better.

There is also information on how to join several seed exchanges
that you can join to get seeds that was breed for your area, and
so that this important gene pool can be kept healthy.

Well the companies name is "Southern Exposure Seed Exchange"
and a catalogue can be had by calling (804)-973-4703. It says it
has a price of $3.oo, but when I called they just took my name
and address and said they would send me one.

Please do! I archive much of what passes through that echo. If you
have FTP access:

ftp sunsite.unc.edu

cd pub/academic/medicine/alternative-healthcare

A wholistic medicine group here in Chapel Hill, The Community
Wholistic Health Center is building a database of reference material on:

nutrition
herbalism
homeopathic medicine
acupuncture
naturopathic medicine

A new acquaintance in Vienna, Austria is involved in building a similar database
on a machine there, a project funded by the City
of Vienna! He will work with CWHC in building the database at sunSITE.

Soon you will be able to access that data with the sunSITE GOPHER.
You will be able to browse through all the FTP directory trees and
read/retreive-by-e-mail all files contained therein. When it's fully
installed and online (a week or so):

telnet sunsite.unc.edu
login: gopher

Also you might want to look at:

telnet twosocks.ces.ncsu.edu
login: gopher

(lots of sustainable agriculture material and many other library and information
resources)

If you're interested in organic gardening and farming have a look at
a database of sustainable agriculture material that I am building:

ftp sunsite.unc.edu

cd pub/academic/agriculture/sustainable_agriculture
