Suggestions for running SIDKIK.BA: (Revised 1/24/92) This is a really cool (and I don't toss that particular superlative around lightly, unless I want to annoy my teenaged daughter) program that does what ADDRSS & SCHEDL do and more, but better! I've been using it for only a week now (as of 1/15/92) and I love it! -Modified from MYDO.BA, and with subroutines similar to those in APTCAL.BA, (both in the Business Catalog) it's the closest thing to a multi-function program with "windows" I've seen for the Model 100/102/200 (yep, runs on all of 'em, I checked it out), kinda like those TSR's you see on PC's and Macs. -It adds mutliple alarms for repeated or one-time-only use. -It sorts your memory joggers into Appointments (sorted by dates) and To-Do's (alphabetically). -Appointments automatically appear in a SIDKIK window on the date of the appointment! To-Do's remain in the window until deleted. -Unlike SCHEDL, you enter Appointments and To-Do's from within SIDKIK. -It's got a memory calculator that can run a print-out for you. -It's got a calendar that displays fast for any month/year you enter, and appears to be accurate. -It makes good use of all 8 function keys, and restores them to their default settings when you exit the program Unfortunately, the author didn't include any documentation and there are practically no REMarks in the program to help you out. ... but first ... Before you run SIDKIK create in RAM four .DO files, which it needs for data entry: ADRS.DO, NOTE.DO, ALARM.DO and T.DO. If you don't create these first, you'll get FF and EF error messages for lines 40 and 45. DON'T change those lines! Do not adjust your set. Do not pass Go. Do not collect CHR$(36)CHR$(50)CHR$(48)CHR$(48). And, as Douglas Adams says, don't panic. Just create those .DO files. Then enter some data in each (again, before running SIDKIK). Doesn't matter what, the program just needs something to read. But, if you want to enter data in the format SIDKIK actually uses, enter something in this format: - in ALARM.DO... *** 09:30 ....these three create *** 14:30 alarms that repeat *** 16:30 every day.... 01/15 08:15 ....or, one day only! - in NOTE.DO... 02/14 12:00 Valentine's Day TO-DO Auto parts for Oldsmobile: oil, trans fluid, radiator stop-leak, coolant, oil change solvent/cleaner TO-DO On second thought, just trash the stupid car! -in ADRS.DO... The Munsters, 1313 Mockingbird Lane, 977-LILY -in T.DO... Actually, you don't have to create this one - the program does it for you. To tell you the truth, I'm not sure what T.DO is for, but I think it temporarily stores, and then automatically deletes, the Appointments and To-Do's that you've deleted. Maybe it stands for T(rash).DO! If you figure it out, drop me a line through the (Menu 1) Conference area, OK? OK, enough hype. If I keep this up you'll think the program author paid me to write this stuff! Here goes: SIDKIK ain't perfect (gasp!). -If you need to store more than a handful of ppointments, o-Do's, etc., you'll need more string space. If you get an error message like: "OS? in Line 265" ....DON'T modify line 265! Go to line 10. See where it says "CLEAR 1000"? That sets the string space to 1,000 bytes - not very much. Change it to whatever length you anticipate needing for your ppointment/o-Do file. Mine's currently set at 5000 and runs with no problems. -The function keys are a tad inconsistent. In the main screen mode F7 is labeled "Reln". I'm pretty sure that should be "Retn", for Return (to get you out of a function key command you don't want to pursue). Make that change in line 15 before you translate the .DO file, unless you like the somewhat enigmatic air it lends to the program. Also, in the Calendar screen mode the Return (to main screen) key becomes F8. Oh, well, no big deal. Get over it. I did. Or change it, if you're so inclined. -If you don't have it already, download SORTLD.BA from the Text catalog. When run it creates SORT.CO, a f-a-s-t! sorting utility. It'll arrange your phone numbers so you needn't worry about entering them in any particular order. Also if you decide to exit SIDKIK while in the middle of scanning your appointments and to-do's, some entries may be displaced from alpha-numeric order. SORT.CO will fix it. Not a big deal, anyway; SIDKIK doesn't really care what order your entries are in... but you might, and it may help the program find entries quicker in lengthy NOTE.DO or ADRS.DO files. ...lessee, what else?... oh, yeah - you can't enter phone numbers, addresses, etc., from within SIDKIK, so you have to do it pretty much like you do with ADDRSS. Rats. Also, the column headings "Home" and "Work" don't quite line up over the numbers. Eventually I'll get around to monkeying with this part of the program, if the author has no objections. Those of you who are so inclined, etc., etc. -The Appointments & To-Do's window doesn't quite line up with the left margin over the View (F1) prompt. Yikes! Enough picking of nits. I mean, waddaya want for nothin', a biscuit? "Why I Like SIDKIK.BA So Much" (a rhapsody in 6K): Because I've got a Model 102 with a Booster Pak and you can't have ADDRSS or SCHEDL, two of the 100/102/200's niftiest features, with the Booster Pak, that's why! I mean, c'mon Traveling Software, you figured out how to make these little boxes do almost everything but talk, why couldn't I have my ADDRSS & SCHEDL, hmmm?!? Didn't you think it was IMPORTANT ENOUGH??!!?? Ahh, never mind. TS doesn't care about our little toys anymore, they've been lured away by the MS-DOS siren song. Anyhow, I tried using IDEA! as a substite for ADDRSS and SCHEDL, but it was SOOOoooo SSSLLLLOOOOOWWWWWwwwwww! By the time I found an entry I'd forgotten why I was looking for it. SIDKIK is pretty fast, about the same as using ADDRSS and SCHEDL. That's why I like it and so will you. A hearty Hey-Ho to the anonymous program author and many thanks!
