Common PC/Modem Problems and Solutions
======================================

Problem: Your software says it can't find your modem.
Solution: Make sure that you have set your communications
software to the COM port where your faxmodem is
                installed.

Problem: You connected using COMit, but got garbage on
                the screen.
Solution: Before dialing, change the settings for Data Bits,
Parity, Stop Bits, and/or Term(inal) to match the
modem or bulletin board service you are calling.
Common settings are Data Bits: 8, Parity: None,
Stop Bits: 1 (8N1). CompuServe uses 7E1, which is
also fairly common. A commonly supported terminal
                type is ANSI.

Problem: Characters you type appear twice on the screen.
Solution: Turn local echo off from within your data
communications program. For COMit for Windows,
choose Settings and select Terminal... Then turn
Local Echo OFF. For COMit for DOS, choose Go
Online from the main menu and select Manual
Commands/Terminal Mode. Then press Alt + E to
                toggle Echo off.

Problem: You can't receive faxes.
Solution: For DOS, TSRs such as screen savers and antivirus
software often affect the ability of a fax program to
answer the phone. Disable TSRs that are in
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. Reboot and try
again. For Windows, make sure Automatic Reception
is enabled and the program is running.

Problem: WinFax won't send WordPerfect 5.1 files.
Solution: With version 5.1 only, WordPerfect suggests that
you make its driver WINFAX.WRS a read only file.
Start File Manager in the Main Windows group. In
the \WPC directory, select WINFAX.WRS. Choose
File and select Properties... In its dialog box, choose
Read Only (so that an X appears). Then choose OK.

Problem: WinFax won't send files from DOS programs.
Solution: You need to import (load) the files into a
compatible Windows program before you fax them
with WinFax. The importing process converts
the file into a format that your Windows
application can print. When you select WINFAX as
your printer in Windows, you then can fax the
                files by printing them.

Problem: WinFax won't send file from Lotus 1-2-3.
Solution: If you click on and move the WinFax dialog box in
1-2-3, you won't be able to send the fax. When you
select WINFAX as your printer and choose Print...,
you can fax directly from 1-2-3 as long as you
                don't move the dialog box.

Problem: The software wont recognize your internal
faxmodems COM port, your mouse wont respond,
or Windows graphics suddenly appear distorted.
Solution: The COM port setting for your internal faxmodem
is probably incompatible with the graphics
accelerator card in your computer. Change the
port setting on your faxmodem to COM3 with IRQ2
or COM3 with IRQ5. See your Owners Manual for
instructions. Then change the IRQ setting in
Ports in the Windows Control Panel.
WinFax Users: If you are changing from
COM4 to COM3, choose Printers in the Windows
Control Panel. Choose WinFax on COM4: from the
list of Installed Printers, and then choose the
Connect... button. Change the port to COM3.

Common Mac/Modem Problems and Solutions
=======================================

Problem: The system reports FAXstf software is "turned off."
Solution: FAXstf software is turned off when you turn on your
Mac without first turning the faxmodem on. Select
Chooser and FaxPrint. Choose Setup, select the Fax
Software icon, and choose Fax Software ON. You can
also copy the unsupported utility FaxState from
your STF disk to your hard drive and double click
on it to instantly turn FAXstf on or off. If you
do not have the FaxState utility, it is available
                on the Zoom BBS.

Problem: Your faxmodem wont send or receive faxes.
Solution: If you are using virus protection software, the
init may conflict with FAXstf software. Try
removing the init from the system folder. Then
restart the Mac. If you are on a network and have
problems faxing, try turning off file sharing.

Problem: Your faxmodem freezes after connecting to a BBS
or online service. Eventually the message
                NO CARRIER appears.
Solution: Your Mac-to-modem cable doesnt support "hardware
flow control" (also called RTS-CTS flow control).
Make sure the cable can support an MNP or V.42bis
modem. It should be a "high-speed modem cable."

Problem: You cant connect to America Online or Prodigy.
Solution: Prodigy and America Online expect the faxmodem to
be a "plain" faxmodem without hardware error
correction or data compression. To instruct the
faxmodem to behave this way, put the command
                string AT\N0&Q0%C0S48=128 in the initialization
string for America Online or Prodigy, or contact
the bulletin board service for their most current
requirements. If you have a VFX V32bis faxmodem,
                use a different command string:
                AT&FE0&Q6&K0\G0%C0X4
If youre unsure where to enter this string,
check with technical support for your software.
NOTE: 0 in the command strings indicates the
number zero, not the letter O.

Problem: Your system reports "modem not responding."
Solution: Try a different Mac-to-modem cable, it may be
defective or have the wrong pin connections.
Though a printer cable looks the same, it wont
work. Check to see that the faxmodem lights go
on when you turn it on. If not, make sure the
power cable is plugged in and the outlet is
working. (Try plugging in a lamp there.)

Problem: Characters you type appear twice on the screen.
Solution: Turn off echo by choosing the MicroPhone Settings
icon from the MicroPhone folder. Then choose
Terminal Settings. Deselect Local Echo (so that
an X does not appear in the box) and choose OK.

Problem: The faxmodem cannot dial from HyperCard.
Solution: In HyperCard, change the dial prefix to AT&C0&D0DT.
