Note from the Editor
--------------------

A Happy New Year to you all. Yet another year has come to a close
and the new buzzword in the industry is multimedia. Sound cards are
being sold with CD-ROM drives and new graphics boards to integrate
both sound and video. Increasingly products are moving towards CD-ROMs
and sound cards seem headed into the wave table synthesis arena.
Yes 1994 should be an interesting year. As for the Sound Newsletter
what is in store? The Sound Newsletter will begin to cover more and
more multimedia applications and hopefully will continue to keep you
on the cutting edge of technology. As planned for 1994 the Sound
Newsletter will come out every two month. Our first issue will be
the Jan/Feb issue. It however is possible that if enough information
and time is available special issues may come out in between.

Before moving on I would just like to touch a little on the Sound
Site CD-ROM. The CD-ROM is a convenient way to store a large amount
of sound files. Island CD Creations and the Sound Newsletter are
trying to make these files easily available to everybody at a
fair price. It is with please that we can announce a new pricing
structure for the CD. Since many of our initial costs have been
covered we are reducing the price to $15 per disc. This price
includes shipping to anywhere in the world. Please see the
CD-ROM.INF file enclosed in this archive for more information.

Would you like to see a new column, write a column, answer questions...
The Sound Newsletter is always looking for additional help. We are
also looking for ASCII artists.

Hello Friends!
Welcome to the MODCHARTS, edition DECEMBER 1993.
Last month, AMINET could not distribute the charts due to harddisk
problems on the main server (Wuarchive). I'm pressing both thumbs
that the admins have more luck with their archive this time. :-)

Please read the textfile "MODCHART.FAQ" for further information if
you are new to this. I hope I explained all the things there. :-)
To all "regulars": Go ahead as usual. If you were online last month, you
now only have to download the three newcomers. If you
didn't download the "old MODs" last month, you have
                   to do it now.

NOTE: Please do not vote for the song "1989 - a number" anymore. It
stayed in the charts for 6 months now and has to quit. If you
want this song back to the charts, please mark it on your vote.

Here we go again, the last time in 1993! ...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Friends!
First of all, a Happy New Year to everyone!
Welcome to the MODCHARTS, edition JANUARY 1994.
The year has changed, and so did the charts. Now you will be able to get
a TOP50! There will be four newcomers now and the "extended display" of
fifty titles will help you to find some newcomer proposals. You may vote
as usual, but from now on, you should propose 3 or more newcomers for
next month's edition of MODCHARTS (please, please, please). Since this is
the only way for a MOD to enter the charts, you better keep this in
mind :-)

Please read the textfile "MODCHART.FAQ" for further information if you
are new to this. I hope I explained all the things there. :-)

** CD-Box v3.05 ** *Update*
********************
By: belt@CS.Stanford.EDU (Jeffrey Belt)

CD-Box is a VGA & mouse player & playback shell to play music on an
AdLib or SoundBlaster card (or better). It provides a common
high-level interface to multiple sound file formats (.CMF .MID .MOD
.MUS .ROL .VOC .WAV and user-defined) with extras: Pause & Repeat &
Volume control, multiple and random song selection in multiple
drives/directories, automatic handling of bank files, song titles and
lengths, playback from .ARC, .ARJ, .PAK and/or .ZIP archives, nice
graphics and funny animations!

The main addition (prompted by many users) in this version is the new
Drives mode, which allows you to display and select whole directory
structures with one mouse click. Song search can also be easily
restricted to certain formats only (like .MOD). Other improvements
include some graphic changes and documentation cleanup. This version
also contains my new address in the United States, the one in v3.02
and below is not longer valid.

For those of you who asked for stereo support, it's not here yet, but
it's coming! I'm hard at work on CD-Box Gold v3.10 (stereo, 386 and
above only), and hope to get it out in not too long... :-)

** Announcing Version 2.3 of The Wave Utilities! ** *Update*
****************************************************
From: ittschir@techfak.uni-bielefeld.de (Tim Tschirner)

December 10, 1993

We're pleased to announce the availability of Version 2.3 of our
successful Windows Multimedia Tool Package, The Wave Utilities.
Version 2.2 was one of the selected finalists in the 1993 Media Vision
Pro AudioSpectrum Shareware Contest.
Starting with this all-new Version 2.3, we're offering a special
registration and update strategy: Register now, and all future
updates will be free! You will get your own Personal Registration Code
(PRC) to turn the Shareware Versions into registered versions, and with
this PRC you can turn ALL upcoming versions into registered versions.
If you're already a registered customer, you can get your PRC for a
very small update fee.

You can obtain an evaluation copy at the following FTP sites:

 - OAK.OAKLAND.EDU and its mirrors in the pub/msdos/windows3
   directory as WAVUTL23.ZIP

 - FTP.CICA.INDIANA.EDU and its mirrors in the pub/pc/win3/sounds
   directory as WAVUTL23.ZIP
(might be found in the pub/pc/win3/uploads directory first)

 - GARBO.UWASA.FI and its mirrors in the windows/sound directory
   as WAVUTL23.ZIP

 - WUARCHIVE.WUSTL.EDU and its mirrors in the pub/MSDOS_UPLOADS/windows
   directory as WAVUTL23.ZIP

If you should not be familiar with The Wave Utilities, here's an
overview:

The Wave Utilities 2.3 is a Multimedia Tool Package for Microsoft
Windows. It consists of Looper and Player, two sound applications.

Looper is a Windows application that plays digitized audio files in
wave format (files with the .wav extension) continuously in the
background. It can handle all the types and formats of Wave files
that your sound card is capable playing of.
You can easily stop and restart the looping process.
With Looper you can have a lot of fun. It can almost turn your
computer into a Sampler, a Beat Box or a drum machine.

Player is a sound player which can handle all the types and formats of
Wave files that your sound card is capable playing of. There are no
imitations to the length of the Wave file to be played.
You are now able to play Wave files by simply double clicking them in
the File Manager. Normally, this isn't the case - launching a Wave file
calls up the Sound Recorder with the Wave file loaded in memory.
If you have a Pro AudioSpectrum 16 or compatible sound card, you can
use its feature to play back two Wave files simultaneously with Looper
and Player. Player can also play Wave files while you're playing .mod
files and much more.
Once you installed Player, launching a Wave file from the File Manager
or Norton Desktop For Window drive windows will play the sound. This
allows greater flexibility for organizing and playing sounds. For
example, you can now install all of your sounds in a Program Manager
group. Double clicking their icons will then play them.
By installing a Wave file in your Autostart Group you are now able to
play a sound of unlimited length when Windows starts up.
When you use Norton Desktop For Windows as your Windows Shell, you can
make easy use of Player's feature to play back several Wave files after
another.

To let the Wave Utilities run on your system, you must have either
Windows with Multimedia Extensions or Windows 3.1 or above installed on
your system. You will also need at least 1 Megabyte of RAM and a sound
card that is capable of playing back digitized sounds (such as a Sound
Blaster card).

If you encounter a bug or have any comments, questions or problems,
you can contact us at the following Internet E-mail addresses:

A Special Note For Owners Of A Pro AudioSpectrum 16 Or Compatible:
------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have a Pro AudioSpectrum 16 or compatible sound card installed
in your system, you can use its special feature of playing back two
Wave files simultaneously with the Wave Utilities.

With best regards,

** MOD4WIN Version 1.02 **
*****************************
From: jpuchert@rodan.syr.edu (Jens Puchert)

Hi everybody out there!

The waiting is over. Mod4Win, the first high quality MOD file player
for Microsoft Windows is here. It's ready for you to download and test.
The following 16 postings contain the complete shareware package of
Mod4Win.

Just uudecode all 16 parts and download the resulting .zip file. The
mod4win.zip file will contain the following files:

readme.txt - with all necessary explanations and instructions
register.txt - registration form to order the full version
install.exe - the program that will install Mod4Win on your hard drive
mod4win.exe - the Windows executable code
mod4win.hlp - the Windows help file
player.dll - the MOD player sound engine
????????.mod - 7 sample MOD files - of course Mod4Win will play all your
               other favorite MOD files
_______________________________________________________________________________

If there's any problem with the downloading and/or decoding, let me
know. I will also post a large uuencoded file that contains
mod4win.zip in one piece. For people who's mail engine can handle
large files, that will be easier and less hassle.

Mod4Win will also be available on major FTP sites. Stay tuned in
this newsgroup for future postings about uploads to FTP sites.

If everything fails, you can receive the uuencoded Mod4Win directly
from me through e-mail.

My e-mail address is jpuchert@rodan.syr.edu

- Jukebox function for up to 999 MOD-Files in one session!
  * generates playlists (with files from up to 100 directories!)

- Drag & Drop feature of one or more files and of playlists.

- Launching of a file or playlist from a command line parameter.

- The program remembers several settings, for instance
  * window positions
  * actual and last play directory
  * hardware settings

- Hotkeys for all player functions
________________________________________________________________________

System requirements

Differences between Shareware- and Full Version
-----------------------------------------------

Principally shareware- and full version are equally powerful. That, of
course, shouldn't raise the question in you "Why should I buy the full
version?" We figured, that a limited shareware version makes no sense,
because naturally a function that hasn't been implemented in the
shareware version can't be tested by you.

At the end of the program we refer to the necessity of the full
version, if you want to use the program frequently. To motivate
you, we also prescribe to you an involuntary break at the beginning
of the program and whenever you try to close the Open and Setup Dialog.
Of course you will be spared all of this, if you buy the program.
Additionally you can determine by the text in the about box what
version you are currently using. If you use the full version, you
will find your name (the name of the license holder) here.

1) I have also uploaded Mod4Win to the following ftp sites:

        ftp ftp.cica.indiana.edu
        cd /pub/pc/win3/uploads

        ftp wuarchive.wustl.edu
        cd /pub/MSDOS_UPLOADS/uploads

The files are called mod4win.zip and mod4win.txt.

Note, that these directories may change, as the system adminis
incorporate the uploads into their hierarchy. I'll keep you
    informed on this.

If none of the above works for you, I'll be glad to send you
the complete uuencoded package by e-mail.

2. Some people wrote me how Mod4Win works under OS/2 and Windows NT.
The basic line of these posts was, that it runs under OS/2 if you
experiment with the settings for the Windows subsystem long enough.
In Windows NT the program apparently doesn't get any farther than
    to the shareware dialog box.

I'm aware that OS/2 and Windows NT gain increasing support and
popularity. This release of Mod4Win however was clearly designed
for Windows 3.1 and is not meant to be run in a preemptive multi-
tasking environment. As more people move to these systems we will
port Mod4Win as well, probably within the next year, however no
    promises on that for now.

3. There was a (very limited) number of questions regarding certain MOD
files that don't behave right. This pertains for instance to files
that sound very different than you're used to, or when Mod4Win won't
play the whole song for an unknown reason. If you have one of these,
please e-mail me about the problem and I will probably ask you to
send me the MOD file, as I will need it to find out what the reason
for this particular problem is. There are thousands of MOD files
that Mod4Win plays just fine, but there is always this slight
    chance...

This does NOT refer to files that cause a message box "This is not a
valid MOD file". Those files are most likely MOD files that feature
6 or more channels and are not supported by this release of Mod4Win.

4. Many problems turn out to be caused by the sound wave driver, the
sound card itself, or certain system setups. If you find a weird
problem that is not covered in the Troubleshooting section of the
help file, please mail me about it and include your system setup,
sound card, wave driver revision number, and video card (yes, the
video card does make a difference). Even if I can't provide you an
immediate solution, by compiling the data we might be able to give
answers in the future or improve the product for that matter.

In general Mod4Win does not depend on any hardware specific features.
It only uses the MCI wave driver interface for the sound output and
therefore should work just fine with any setup that claims to support
MPC. However this is the theory only and odds want it that the
    practice is a little different.

However, for the vast majority of users there won't be any problems
and Mod4Win will play all their MOD files flawlessly.

** Dual MOD Player Companion ** ** Update **
**********************************
Version 1.80

Listed below is just come of the updates to DMPC.

                          Dual Module Player Companion
                                  Version 1.80
                           (C) 1993 Psychic Psoftware

NEW: File inclusion mask for different players 'cause some players can't
play S3M etc. Added WAV/SND/VOC support (no validation is done on
     the files though).

Features:
   - Supports: MOD, STM, AMF, S3M, 669, NST, VOC, WAV and SND.
   - Reads the directory much faster than ModPlay v2.19b ((C) Mark Cox).
   - Reads up to 1000 music files in any directory.
   - Reads/plays music files from inside ARJ, LHA/LZH and ZIP archives.
   - Mouse support.
   - Play a list of files sequentially or in random order.
   - You can use DMP or PMP (and almost any other player... but who would
want to use anything but the best?)
   - Selection window accommodates 43/50 line mode.
   - Switch between 25 and 43/50 line modes.
   - Load/Save tagged selection.
   - Change drive/directory.
   - Fast file find with partial matching.
   - Help page.
   - Extract to temp directory.
   - Recognizes Amiga style MOD.NAME format.
   - Delete files.
   - Multiple config definitions.
   - Shell to DOS.
   - Format inclusion masking.

What's new in version 1.80:

Fixed a balancing routine in the selection menu (gave one out in a
special case). DMPC will read only the formats in the inclusion mask
if you (re-)read a directory. Swapper will swap to either the temp
directory defined in the environment variable TMP or TEMP, or to the
temp directory defined in the DMPC config (in that order). Support
for Squeeze It (SQZ) archives. Reading uncompressed files should be
faster now. Fixed a bug in the play tagged routine. Changed config
into a more flexible INI-type format. Use CTRL-C for a fast change of
directory on the current drive. Use CTRL-D to delete all tagged files.
You can specify the directory DMPC will start up in on the
command-line, eg. DMPC \MYDIR\MODDIR.

DMPC is THE front-end for DMP/PMP (and almost any command-line driven
player). DMPC v1.80 can be found at:

  ftp.uwp.edu /pub/incoming/modplayers OR /pub/msdos/modplayers
