Ŀ
 USAGE 7

        Introduction:

It is sometimes occurs that a computer is stored in a place many
people have access to. However not all of them are authorized to
use the computer. Think of family members, people at computer fairs,
universities etc. The computer should be protected against
unauthorized access in these cases. If you are a computer operator
or system administrator, logging user logins are can be quite handy.

     1) Installation:

        a) Copy the files in the package to a directory, for example in
           C:\LOCKPC

        b) Edit the LOCKPC.CFG file. The program will store the user
information and the log file in the path you set in this file.
This file must be in the same directory as LOCKPC.EXE.

        c) Include the following two lines in the beginning of your
           CONFIG.SYS file:

SWITCHES=/n/f - use this line if you have MS-DOS
                                            to prevent users skipping the
                                            CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
            INSTALL=C:\LOCKPC\LOCKPC.EXE  - this line executes the LOCKPC.EXE
file, which asks for a login name
                                            and a password.

If the program is used in Windows95 systems, the Windows95
boot menu should be disabled to prevent the users skipping
the CONFIG.SYS file. This can be achieved by inserting the
following line in the hidden MSDOS.SYS file in the Windows95
root directory under the [Options] section:
           BootKeys=0

        d) With the NEWUSER utility create new users by entering
a login name and a password.

        e) Set drive C: the default boot drive in your system's BIOS,
then set up a BIOS setup password so others cannot use a boot
floppy to skip the LOCKPC utility.

     2) Using LOCKPC

After the computer booted up the LockPC screen appears asking for
a valid login name and a password. Each can be entered 3 times
before the program denies access. Invalid accesses are also logged.

Never leave the computer alone when it is booted up, because anyone
        can make new users!

The user and password information are saved in a file you have set
        in the LOCKPC.CFG file.
This is a simple text file, which contains the login names
        and the encrypted passwords.

To add a new user: use the ADDUSER utility
To change a password: use the CHPASS utility
To delete a user: remove the proper line from the password file

The logfile contains the access logs. It is a simple text file.
Every line contains information about an access in this form:

        04/06/97 18:43:54 MSDOS - dick
        (date) (time) (OS) (login name)

     4) Uninstalling

Simply remove the two lines you've added to your CONFIG.SYS file.
