ͼ SKI-#/SKI-ORDER-#
To add a Record to a SKI-file, first enter 3 initial letters (any Case)
of any name associated with it & likely to be in the current NAM. These
prompts can be taxonomic or a Common Name. Otherwise key in the 3-digit
SKI-# as the PROMPT. [Cf: 3-letter NAMES need <F10> for Keyboard entry.]
Eg, using SHORT NAM (1A-3--02.NAM), you can enter "Red Fox" using these 7
menu prompts (=9 options!). (*) = best; these make full use of 'TRACE'.
         Genus/sp. level: RED(*) FOX(*) VUL(*)(Vulpes/vulpes)

ͼ TAXONOMIC Menus
Keying in 3 initial letters calls up an ALPHA-Menu - a list of names with
the same initial letters. These names appear with single-digit Menu-##.
Also present are 3-digit SKI-##, in sequence, to help you discriminate.
Selecting a name from the ALPHA-Menu engages TRACE - arrows highlight the
pathway through the menus to the chosen name. The ALPHA-selection leads
to new TAXONOMIC Menus, usually with 1 or 2 hierarchies of subsidiary
names. Menus of Family, Genus, species and Common Names appear in turn.
The number of selectable names in each menu is shown, top left as 'n = xx'.
Use this info, when TRACE is not in use, to be aware of all menu items.

ͼ NUMBER PAD; ARROWS
Several options are available to help you move through the Menus.
The <PgUp> and <PgDn> keys of the NUMBER PAD let you advance or go back
by a page at a time (10 lines of Taxonomic Menu); see also 'Jump'[Edit].
The <Up/8> and <Down/2> Arrow Keys move the Menus one line per keystroke.
Additionally, the <Enter> key advances the Menus from one selectable item
to the next, ie from one Menu-# to the next. NB: with this feature some
names may be by-passed, eg some species names in long Genus Menus.
The arrows which TRACE selected ALPHA-Menu names are usually specific, but
initial selection of a group name may mean watching for alternatives.

ͼ
Menu names, like 'Red Fox' and 'Canidae', come from NAMe-files (or NAMs).
A NAMes-file is currently loaded; SKI_IN needs at least one and you may
have use for several. Family-level NAMs can give wide taxonomic
cover, eg all Plant Families are contained in just one or two NAMs
(depending on added detail). On the other hand, species-level NAMs give
more detailed assistance - but only for several hundred species.
  NAMs are interchangeable.  Exit by <Esc> to Main Menu and choose 'Edit:A';
see the Menu of available NAMe-files and select one by its Menu-#.
Any number of NAMs can contribute to any one SKI-checklist. Powerful!

ͼ MENU ITEMS
NAMeTrees display the taxonomic contents of NAMe-files in a standard,
structured way. See them via Input Names 'Edit:E:<F4>'; exit by <Esc>.
Most NAMeTrees contain a leading section of 'CLASSIFICATION'; this
defines the Menu contents. Names from these Classification sections
are not available to the MENU system. A few NAMs consist entirely of
Classification; these may be helpful, but SKIS does not depend on them.
'MENU ITEMS' may be to Family, Genus or species levels and are seen as
the second and main part of typical NAMeTrees; they show most of the
available Menu names, but additional names may appear in the ALPHA-Menu.

ͼ
If a name you want to enter is not available from the Menus, either change
to a more relevant NAMes-file or change to KEYBOARD INPUT via <Esc>/<E>.
This happens automatically if the NAMes-file runs out of MENU options as
in Family level NAMs. Then just key in the name you want.
Again, if you have a Common Name, but don't know taxonomic names for it,
enter ORDER and '*' instead; the names can be edited in later. For
coding purposes '*' is incremented as for a full name. You did see it!
The following, as a temporary record, may well be better than no record:-

Entries to a SKI-list are likely to contain runs of related taxa, so, as
one entry is completed, you can either enter another 3-letter prompt
and go through the full run of menus - or you can use 'BOUNCEBACK'.
BOUNCEBACK lets you return to a recent screen menu for automatic entry.
    Type & Enter:- '1'  for the ORDER Menu;  '2'  for the Family  Menu;
or '3' for the Genus Menu; '4' for the species Menu.
Alternatively, just key in and enter one name after another.
At any time you can LOCATE, via <F4><F5>, the NAMeTree occurrence of the
most recent record in the current SKI-file and see its classification.

The most recent SKI-file entries show when you move into the 'Input Name'
page. <F3> turns this DISPLAY On/Off and shows two alternative formats.
When a Menu Screen is called up, DISPLAY is lost but returns as the new
record is completed; a quick check shows if any Editing is needed.
EDIT <F2> brings to the screen the same SKI-file records as Display but
with additional features such as a bar to help in selection of records.
DISPLAY may be undesirable for floppy disk users since it may slow down
input by an unacceptable amount; so, no need to keep it on routinely.
But hard disk users will probably wish to have it 'on' at all times.

Pressing <F2> gives you the freedom to MOVE within the SKI-file and lets
you EDIT any items in the file, except SKI-ORDER Names and SKI-Numbers.
DISPLAY (toggle <F3>) shows the most recent 0, 3 or 12 SKI-file records.
The 3-record DISPLAY shows the full 'Other Info.' text. The current
record is highlighted; a counter gives its SKI-file line no. = Record-#.
To MOVE, follow the NUMBER PAD symbols as shown on screen. First MOVE up
the file by one line at a time using the <Arrow/8> key, or use the JUMP
feature, via <PgUp/9>, to JUMP 2/10 lines at a time. To change JUMP SIZE,
   eg to 5 or 125, use <Right Arrow/6> & <R>; try <Home>/<End> keys. /Contd.

To EDIT a record (ie one set of taxonomic names plus O/I) engage EDIT via
<F2> from the Input Names page; then MOVE into and within the record by
using the keys of the Number Pad. Once the record is highlighted you can
enter it using <Arrow Left/4>; the Genus name is targeted first.
The <Arrow Up/8> key moves control up, eg from Genus to Family. To go down
again to Other Info' use the <R>, <Arrow Down/2> or <Arrow Right/6> keys.
To alter any name [other than SKI-ORDER] or text, just key in the changes -
Edit lets you perform all basic WORDPROCESSING functions. To return to

Use RESTRUCTURE after keying in, editing or merging files. This act brings

During RESTRUCTURE, newly sequenced names may be given new Family, Genus &

In Restructured files, SKI-numbers are predictable, readable & meaningful.

ͼ SKI-files can be exported using the above 7 'Prints'.
Also, SKI-Files convert to TEXT, DATABASE & SPREADSHEET files for Export.
These format conversions produce new files in your SKI/default directory.
  The new files, -.TXT, -.CRD and -.CSV (TeXT; Carriage Return Delimited;
Comma Separated Variables) overwrite existing files with the same names.
TXT-files (from SKI-files) can be taken up by Wordprocessor (WP) programs.
CRD-files have 10 fields for capture by Database programs (O/I field = #6)
CSV-files let you arrange 'Other Info.' into 'Comma Delimited' fields.
TXT, CRD & CSV copies of files are economical on space for storage, but do
    not reconvert to SKI-files in SKI_IN v 5.6. [But see SKI-PLUS, p.33]

  ALSO - SKI-files can be viewed on-screen in 7 different display formats;
the same formats print to paper & convert to 'wysiwyg'-.TXT files on disk.
These are suitable for E-mail, editing into reports, archiving, etc, etc.
